Bitcoin (or just crypto-currency in general) have 2 types of mining. Technically ANY computer can mine, but certain hardware, such as ASIC for bit-coin in specific are built to do such.

2 types of mining is CPU mining, and GPU mining (which is more common as it is generally better).

I probably wont build a bitcoin mining computer, but I am very interested in how it works, spec requirments, and software needed.

You don't really do that anymore, because it is not profitable anymore.

You use more power with regular PC components versus what you make in Bitcoins.

2-3 years back you made a PC with a very good (AMD) GPU and you were pretty much set. Now you are much better off with dedicated miners.
