Should i get a new PSU?

ThatJuanGuy

So for my current gaming PC I was on a tight budget (around £450). I currently have a Radeon HD6770 but I would like to upgrade to a 7950. The only problem is that my power supply is only 500 watts (Corsair CX500) and i'm not sure if the 7950 can work with that much power. Should I get a new power supply? If so i wouldn't like to spend over £80, I would also like it to be fully modular :)

Here is my current build:

FX-4100 OC @ 4.2GHz (might put it back to stock if i get a new GPU)

8GB Corsair 1333MHz

Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro rev 2

ASUS M5A75L-M/USB3

XFX 6770 1GB

Fractal Design Define Mini

Corsair CX500

128GB Samsung 830 SSD

500GB WD Green

300GB (some HDD from my old PC)

Thank you :)

No need to upgrade as long as you don't Overclock your GPU, i was running i5 2500k and a radeon hd 7970 ref flashed to GHz on a corsair ax 430W for 2 weeks, no problems ;)

Main Rig: Intel Core i5 2500K @4.7Ghz, Noctua NH-U12s, Asus z68 V-Pro, Evga GTX 970, Samsung EVO 250Gb, Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1600 MHz 16GB,fractal design define r3, XFX XXX 850W

Laptop: Clevo w230st, 13.3" 1080p screen,  CPU intel i5 4200M(Someone want's to donate a i7-4700qm? :P), 8gb ram 1600Mhz, Geforce gtx 765m, SSD: mSata Evo 120Gb(still room for one more), HHD: 1Tb 7200rpm,

2 weeks? well that is promising :p Did you get a different PSU? Can you think of a PSU that's around 650w and is fully modular?

Yes; Seasonic x650

Although,i don't think you'll need it.

You won't need a new PSU as long as you don't overclock and as for a 650W fully-modular PSU, i'm nut sure, but there are plenty of semi-modular ones.

I think I'll just keep my CX500 for now and keep the money and buy the Kraken X40, thank you :)

My main PSU (850W) died so i had to steal my servers PSU. the XFX ProSeries XXX Edition 650W is good and you can find it cheap, at least in Norway.

PS. small correction to the last post, it was a CX not an AX ._.

One other thing is, there could be a slight possibility that 7950 might bottleneck the FX-4100. There was a article from Toms Hardware that tested if a i3 and fx-4100 would a bottleneck a 7970 and 680 and the conclusion was it did bottleneck.

I'm keeping the FX-4100 until AMD release a proper competitor to the i5, and as long as i can play every game on high/ultra then i'm happy:p

If your interested to know how the FX-4100 performance together with a 7970 you could checkout this site http://www.sweclockers.com/recension/15375-amd-fx-6100-och-fx-4100-bulldozer (Swedish website' date=' the graph should still be helpful though). [/quote']

Thank you, but i would like t buy the 7950:p I can't even find the graphs..

The 500W power supply should be fine. Just don't overclock anything. I have a similar configuration with a 3570k on the Corsair CX500

if you're looking for a 650w PSU EVGA just released two 650w bronze and gold for aroung $100-$120. they are new to the PSU business, but they are offer free 10yr warranty upgrades right now and their RMA service is great.

Looks nice, and it's really cheap. Although the only bad thing is that it has multiple rails, i heard they can be a pain to work with as you have to manage your power:/
