So I'm planning to get a Minecraft server using port-forwarding.

But I'm not the only one on the network and other people are uhm afraid that a virus will come on the network and infect all of the connected devices.

So what are the chances of a virus coming?

Also, I noticed in the router menu, that firewall was disabled.

How is it possible?

Is it dangerous?

Thanks for the help.

Private server or public?

Port forwarding is basically making a small pinhole in your firewall.

Private server or public?

Private, for me and my friend at first, then after some time maybe a 1 - 2 more people would join.

Nothing bad would happen, before first ddos attack start.

No one will be able to "upload a virus" if u open a port for the minecraft.

Anyways, provide good tpc filtering, otherwise it will be a problem.

TPC filtering?

Also, I'm not saying someone will "upload a virus", but could a virus, you know, get on the network somehow?

  1. Private, for me and my friend at first, then after some time maybe a 1 - 2 more people would join.
  2. Also, I'm not saying someone will "upload a virus", but could a virus, you know, get on the network somehow?
  3. What could happen?
  1. You can just as well use Hamachi. Unstable, but if your with 4, it suffices and it's safe.
  2. The worst thing, as far as I know, that can happen, is a DDOS, which will crash your network for a while.

But, they need your IP-address for that, so just make sure that you trust the people that join.

  3. Firewall protects you from unwanted access to your pc and network. Making a hole in it will do the opposite, but will than also ALLOW not-bad-stuff, like servers.

TPC filtering?

I mean TCP, of course. Misstyped.

Viruses are usually being uploaded to one of the network pc's, so if u don't do it yourself, nothing bad would happen.

Anyways, if there will be about 2-4 people on the server, as u say, u have nothing to fear.

No one will waste their time to attack a simple private network. Again, if u don't feel like u can deal with it, use some software like tunngle, hamachi etc. It will help u to establish connection with your friends without opening ports (they use safe upnp).

I used Hamachi before, and I wanna get rid of it so I'm doing this to replace it.

Not really an option.

If u enable the firewall in your current router, do port forwarding to let your friends play on your server, nothing bad will happen.

As I said, no one will be interested in 2-4 players server, so u're safe.

as long as there is a firewall rule and is port forward to your server it can go only one way

soo when log into your router you can find a page that looks like this

http://prntscr.com/6sfevc

and create a new rule

the page should look like this or similar

http://prntscr.com/6sfl32

insure youre ports are 25565 for tcp and udp for minecraft on the internal and external ports and its says "server IP" is the address of the computer that the minecraft server is running on

in my case its 192.168.127 so when youre freinds try to connect to you server it ask your router for directions and you have told router where it is

do enable lan loopback if its available as it lets you join

and change the  the user interface some form of ppp setting not ip/eth as its connected to internet

then create the rules in your windows firewall through this window as pictured

 http://prntscr.com/6sfmir

its like the router but more pages

remember minecraft is port 25565 other games and programs and windows features use different ports

when its setup like this you only have one path and no other dangerous port are left open for bad people to connect to

all they can do is minecraft
