Bad 4790K?

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

OK. These stock cooler temps don't seem to good thoug.. Minecraft open.. Teamspeak, and listening to music I get to 80 C. Is that too high?

Yes.

One thing I just remembered, you have an H440.  Have you tried removing the top cover?  Assuming your AIO is mounted in the roof.  The H440 is notorious for poor airflow.  Usually not as bad as you are experiencing, but it can cause a nice drop in temps if you remove the covers.

Again, try the washer mod.

So I just picked up a 4790K and I think my temps might be to high... I was using an H100i Liquid cooling loop and on minecraft I was getting around 80-90 C and so I went back to the stock cooler. Now on minecraft I'm still geting 70 C Is this to high? Do I have a bad CPU?

I don't think so. Make sure the coolers are properly latching to the cpu socket, and make sure that you swap the stock thermal paste out for something better.

A couple things can cause issues like this, you first need to check some stuff before jumping to conclusions.

I've re mounted multiple times, used 3 different thermal pastes and used different fans on the H100i, I even tried the O ring trick...

Sounds like a bad mount to me. Try removing it and starting from scratch. Should not be that high.

is your h100i circulating properly are you making sure to get a good seal between the water block and the CPU

Well I'm not sure... On my old CPU (3770K) with a 4.2GHz overclock I would get to 90-100 with ease. But are these temps to high for the stock cooler too? I tried re mounting it multiple times..

Those temps on a stock cooler OCed I wouldn't be surprised.

I know this may sound stupid but did you use alcohol to clean the thermal paste ??

It's not overclocked. This is on stock voltage and everything. The overclock I was talking about was for my old CPU. This one has NO OVERCLOCK.

Yes I did clean it with alcohol. Scrubbed it for a LONG time.

Those chips shouldn't be anywhere close to 90-100 with a h100i, my h110 had a 3570k (4.2) around 45-55 in games, 65-70 stress and has my 4790k @ 4.7 around the same temps with ic diamond 7 paste

It sounds like ether the h100 block isn't mounted correctly or plugged in, if it is mounted correctly / plugged in it probably faulty.

I bet the problem is related to the H100i, maybe the fan speed - but this is a really really long shot - ? or the pump isn't working probably.

why nobody suggest it yet? just touch it with hand, the heatsink, see if it gets really hot, which is unlikely,. for the stock if mount is bad.

i've heard h100's had bad plates, some of them, so that might be the issue?

70 on stress test sounds high but not too high i wouldn't think.

OK I will defiantly RMA it then. I also have a Hyper T4  cooler but that thing is a pain in the ass to get on so I'm not going to test that... I spent 30 minutes trying to get that damn thing on.... Idle temps are now around 35-40 on stock cooler.

70 for the stock cooler with no oc sounds about right, that is really close to what my friend gets with his, I get about 65-70 at 1.3 volts at 4.7 with my 4790k with the intel stress tester

Check voltages, eventhough they're stock. What actual voltages is the board using, because it could very well be too high with an ROG board from ASUS.

1.3-1.4 V too high it seems.

Can you post a screenshot in that topic? That's number 5 I believe.

Try updating your BIOS, in some cases that fixes it. Otherwise you have to use an offset voltage of -100/-200. Whatever your processor allows.

i7 4790ks do have a tendency to run toasty.  I've actually been through two of them.  The first one, I returned because it was hitting the thermal limit and shutting down to prevent damage.  This was with a stock voltage of 1.21v and the stock cooler.  With a Cooler Master N520, it was hitting 95 with stock settings.

The second one wasn't doing much better but at least its staying below 100 with the stock cooler.  the CM N520 was doing about 90.  I also got a Corsair H80i and that took the temps down to 85.  I eventually caved in and built a custom loop to keep the temepratures somewhat comfortable in the 70s with a 4.7ghz overclock and 1.27v.

The whole point of the 'Devil's Canyon' CPUs were to fix the Thermal Interface Material problems the original Haswell CPUs were having but in actuality, it's still a mixed bag.  There are some telltale signs of a bad TIM such as idle temps that are uniform but under load, one core would be drastically different from the other three.  If you've checked and double-checked that you applied the thermal paste and set the your cooler properly and if you've also checked that your MoBo is using up to date bios and there are no gremlins there, I'd honestly bet your problem is the TIM and unless your temps are causing BSoDs under the stock settings, there's really not much you can do since the product is technically operating within Intel specs.
