Bad 4790K?

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

OK. These stock cooler temps don't seem to good thoug.. Minecraft open.. Teamspeak, and listening to music I get to 80 C. Is that too high?

Yes.

One thing I just remembered, you have an H440.  Have you tried removing the top cover?  Assuming your AIO is mounted in the roof.  The H440 is notorious for poor airflow.  Usually not as bad as you are experiencing, but it can cause a nice drop in temps if you remove the covers.

Again, try the washer mod.

I will try that tomorrow. But with the stock cooler I have on right now are those temps to high? Should I try to get a new CPU? I also removed the top cover and it did MAYBE 5 C max....

Thats normal for stock cooler on an i7-4790k.  This is a 4 core, 8 thread, 4.0Ghz Processor with a stock voltage of 1.2v+.  The thing runs hot.

Your H100i is likely the problem.

Well I also hit the TJ Max on the STOCK cooler on battlefield hardline yesterday after playing for about 40 minutes. But yeah it is running at 4.4 with turbo boost

They went down. Now with the stock cooler minecraft around 70 and Battlefield hardline around 85-90. Still too high for stock cooler?

Way too high for stock. Do the following:

- Update your BIOS, here's the official DL from ASUS http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/MAXIMUS-VII-HERO/MAXIMUS-VII-HERO-ASUS-2012.zip

- Disable "ASUS multicore enhancement" in UEFI

Should be fine by now. If that isn't enough do what he said:

Mine was running 1.42V out of the box. I'm now at 1V Vcore with 4Ghz @ all cores, turbo disabled and it maxes out at 44°C during stresstesting with a Scythe Mugen 4 push/pull, ambient 18°C. I didn't have the time to find the sweetspot yet, i'll report back when i'm finished tweaking. Just wanted to show you that those things can stay pretty cool even with an average cooler if you set it up correct.

That download for the BIOS isn't an exe. How do I install it?

1.3-1.4 V too high it seems.

Ok so I tried to do an offset of .100 and it just crashes so I put it to .50 and its at 1.2-1.3 now. Should I go for .75?

do a bios update if that dont fix it send it in. stock it shouldnt reach 1.3 between 1.1-1.25  so my guess do a bios update look on there site how to do. after that if your temps dont drop with h100 witch should be around 40to 50 at 100% load if not send it in.

I just brought the voltage down and it helped the temps A TON! Idle is now 30 C and on Battlefield Hardline I get 75! Huge improvement (~20C) Can't wait to see my H100i temps C:

Check voltages, eventhough they're stock. What actual voltages is the board using, because it could very well be too high with an ROG board from ASUS.

Thanks for the help! Brought the temps down ~20 C on load.

H100i + socket 1150 doesn't go that well together, the mount can be loose. I did this rubber ring thingy mod (washer mod) and my temps are a dream.

Temps = 30 idle, 50-60 under load.

Didn't bother to try without the washer mod though.

Hardware: 4790k @ 4.6 GHz w/ H100i - MSI GTX 970 - Define R5 - MSI Z97 PC Mate - 840 EVO - G.Skill 2x4 GB

Peripherals: G402 - ATH-AD700x - Asus VG248QE 144 hz

Idle temps now under 20 C! Works wonders... Also downed the voltage helped too. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it! Also if this helps I am not using the stock fans that came with the H100i I am using the Cougar CFV12HPB. They work great, more static pressure, quieter, and move more air, how could I not buy them! Link here if anyone else wants them.
