I had a 7 years old system with

Core2Duo E4400 2.0Ghz

Intel G31 Motherboard

500GB Seagate HDD

2GB DDR2 RAM

Now i am experiencing slow processing , freezing and most of the 100% CPU usage.

some time it even says "missing operating system " or takes a long time to boot

So should i add more RAM and a new hard drive for performance or buy a new cpu ?

Today buying a new CPU is expensive because of motherboard compatibility issue,

For CPU , hows the performace difference in Pentium 4th Generation G3220 and Core2Duo E4400 ?

Does CPU , Board and Ram degrades over time ?

Well you could get a core 2 quad or a higher end core 2 duo like the e8500 or even a x5450 with a sticker to make it work on 775 motherboards. Getting an SSD would help speed things up and get at least another 2gb of ram.

Depends on what he's running, he mentioned he's on 100% CPU usage.. I think 8gb ram should be a minimum then. you get to 4gb so quick nowadays.

Core 2 quad or core 2 duos is not available here .

browsing & downloading , everyday usage

I'm afraid you'll have to get a new motherboard and grab a i5 processor, 4gb ram (minimal) even though I recommend 8gb ram, especially if you game. you can get a fairly cheap GPU if you don't game.

You might need a new case to fit this all in though, you'll have to browse a little bit yourself to see what fits your needs. I mean there are so many choices out there ;p

Get a SSD if you want to boot your OS quick but this is not necessary as it's quite expensive.

looks like the little mouse turning the wheel is exhausted or dead, you need a serious upgrade and as everything is so old now it would really need to be a whole new rig.

only other thing is clean it up, get a SSD or hybrid drive, see if you can get a faster cpu for that socket, look on ebay for used or recon parts.

upgrade what you have to the max. and you might get another year or so from it.

defrag your hard drive, but getting a faster one will be better.

got to love Asus components

If he doesn't game onboard integrated intel graphics should be fine. although i agree with a new motherboard is required, depending on budget even an i3 cpu would be a massive jump in performance for his basic needs. an SSD is not cost effective at all, if OP has a 7 year old system an SSD should not be a priority, especially as it seems there is an obvious budget.

I agree, a SSD will be way to expensive.

Integrated graphics will do fine you just browse the net, watch movies, basically "everyday computing". If you wanna game on it aswell, I do recommend a dedicated GPU.

Focus your mind on the processor and motherboard though, they're the most important features you're looking for. an i3 or i5 will be a huge improvement.

I wouldn't classify the motherboard as the most important, as long as it is a modern board supporting DDR3 and the 1150 socket the performance of a $200 board vs $60-100 is not that great, and especially ideal for budgets. Although in my opinion $100 is the sweet spot for the motherboard. And a core i3 haswell dual core CPU running you back around $155(or an i5 quad core for $255) leaving around $90 for a single channel 8GB kit. overall around $350 which is quite affordable for such an old system.
