Is it worth a few extra dollars to get a desktop mic (with possibly a stand in the future) for both making youtube videos for gaming and just using for ingame audio and chatting with friends?

If you have the room for it: IMO, yes.

I've actually been looking at desktop mics because I find things like modmic's to be not worth it. They sound good for their size but i have enough desk space for an AT-2020USB and that's what I'll be getting in a few weeks.

I can recommend the BlueMic Snowball. Rather cheap, very nice sound quality, and desktop mics have, in my experience, a much longer lifespan as their cable is not constantly pulled compared to a mic attached to your headphones.

I can always put it in between my keyboard and mouse (under the arrow keys).

If background noise isn't an issue, then sure.

I do have a mechanical keyboard, would that be a problem?

I was considering that, or an Audio-Technica

There's pros and cons to both.

Well yeah, like how convenient it would be to have a small mic connected to my headset, or how good the desktop mic sounds.
