nvidias new cards are yes, but thats because amd hasnt released anything to compete with it yet so nvidia can charge whatever they want for the time being

To be fair, the sterling has lost about 20-25% against the US dollar.

True, but doesn't justify a 75% price increase on a top end card compared to what it used to be.....Nvidia are rip off merchants

because back in the day for example a 8800GTX which was the top end card when it was released was around £300, now look at the GTX780 £550.

I highly doubt costs over the years have gone up that much that they have to increase the price by £250....

Also as soon as the release a new generation of card, rather than continuing to manufacture the older models (600 series) and drop the price, they stop and keep the prices artificially high, because of the increasing lack of supply of the older cards.

The only way to get any value for money with Nvidia cards now is to be a generation or 2 behind and buy second hand.

It is pretty much economies of scale, PC sales have been dwindling over the past 5 years or so, the 8800GTX was, during it's inception, at almost the peak of PC sales since it's decline. So basically, if less people buy graphics cards they have to cover their overheads, R&D and other operating costs with the number of cards sold. When PC sales were high, they've got a greater volume, thus they would be able to drop prices, but benefit through a greater volume sold.

when technology gets better it increases  like the new games on these new consoles they are ridiculously priced compared to what they were :3

That's not necessarily true, it seems like technology is being less and more expensive now. An example is the ps3 being $600 on launch. The ps4 will be $400 on launch. It all varies but you are right, games have been getting overpriced (besides steam sales ;P) just like EA amping up prices to $80.

I think that we're all missing the fact that the US dollar is losing value, with quantitative easing, the dollar loses almost 80-100b a month. Don't want to get too technical with boring details but in the whole scheme of things, prices haven't really changed too much relative to the economic situation of the western world.

the have the products....people are willing to pay for them and they have no competition. Last I checked Nvidia wasn't a non-profit organization.
