I want to build a new gaming rig, and I want a huge hard-drive for all my games and files, so I settled on 3TB for the best bang for the buck. so where I live (not the US), its an option between the Seagate Barracuda 3TB or the WD Green 3TB. after research on the WD Green, I learnt that the WD Green turns off when not in use, to save power. Now, I dont want that. I want my drive to be as fast as it can be anytime. not to mention that the green drive is 5400 RPM and the barracuda is 7200 RPM.

But then, when I started researching about the Barracuda, I saw the MANY people are complaining about the drive failing just after the warranty (about 2 years). And yes, I know that the 3TB model has 3 1TB platters and the the 2TB has 4 500GB platters (which is what I was reading about), so I thought the 3TB model will be more reliable, right? (I hope that made sense)

but my question is, how really unreliable is the 3TB model (in particular, not the 2TB one)?

Quote me if you want to say something. Only way i'll see something.

I've had 2 for about a year and a half now and they seem brand-new still.

I trip to make the fall shorter

Personally instead of going out and buying one 3TB I would settle with a 2TB and a 1TB or 2Tb and a 500GB SSD.

Been playing on a laptop for 6 years, I play Dota 2 with 10fps. Some might say this is impossible, I say its just annoying

where I live, 3TB costs about 70 NIS (about 12 bucks) more than 2TB so its the best bang for the buck. 500GB SSD? yeah not happening.

The reason its probably a little more is because its not reliable (im guessing don't take my word for it) but what are you doing that you're going to fill up 3TB's?

they are rated as unreliable, by a lot of WD owners.  I have a 2tb and it works great. and tbh the 3tb is great too

generally, as much games as valve can give me when I empty my wallet during steam sales.

and maybe a youtube channel down the road.

I have one sitting in my PC right now... No issues with the drive so far...

But the only annoying thing is that I have to install a software to have full access of the drive...

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

You'd barely fill a 2TB with games and as far as youtube videos go, you wont use all that space unless you're keeping every single video recorded

sure whatever but its only 12 bucks more for the 3TB over the 2TB one, and it has better platters. I think its a deal. dont you?

Ignore him, his entire argument is that HE can't find a use for it, so you don't need it.  The 3tb is a better deal of money per size.   And it is your money, if you want 3tb, get the 3tb.

On to your question, I have 24 3tb Seagate drives.  Bought in groups of 8 at different times, all are still running just fine after a few years each and I have not been kind to them.

I have no idea why anyone would need 24 3TB drives (unless you're running the google servers), but thanks for letting me know!
