Chipset matters?

Go to solution Solved by VioDuskar,

Okay so if I'm going to properly match up a CPU to a motherboard I need to know, the socket, the chipset, anything else?

color scheme. if the CPU doesn't match the MB's colors then your system will explode.

no not really.

just match your RAM (DDR3 in your case.) with your MB too, and everything else should be universal.

Hi, I'm planning on buying an ASUS P9D WS and an Intel i7 4790k, the motherboard says something about chipset but on intel's ark page it doesn't say anything, so do these things need to match up or something?

just make sure the socket type matches, and check with the MB maker to see if your CPU is supported. it should be listed on the maker's webpage for that MB.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

Yes, chipset is very important. It means that a board is verified by the production company that it will work with a given class of CPU. like, an i7 4790k requires a Z97 chipset or better, and a Xeon "technically" requires it's own chipset.

Those two products work together, so don't worry. Asus is just bragging that their board is officially sanctioned by Intel to work with Xeons.

The socket matches, but that's not what I'm asking.

i'm telling you the chipset isn't that important.

as others have said, the z97 is a more common, and newer chipset, but your combo works fine.

why are you getting a work station otherboard BTW?

Okay can you go into detail a bit more about the chipset

I've been told work station grade motherboards are the best to get

they're great. but get a motherboard based on what you need, not what you hear you need. go with features, not name.

i'd go with the newer Z97 instead of that C22whatever that that WS MB has.

also, on the z97

Okay so just to be sure though, the intel core i7 4790k will work with this motherboard though right? http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/P9D_WS/
