How much RAM is necessary for the average gaming computer? Anything over 16 gigabytes sounds overkill to me, but is it necessary to have a lot of RAM?Also, if anybody has a recommendation for a specific brand or type of RAM, that would help a lot! Thanks!

You can game on 4gb in reality, but 8 is best. Anything more isn't needed. And brand of ram just comes down to looks.

Yea, I'll search around then for the brand I want. Thanks for the reply, I'm thinking I will go with 8 gigabytes and spend more money on something more important like the GPU(s).

8gigs seems to be the sweet spot for gaming. but you can't really have too much RAM.....

I personally just find the cheapest RAM that fits my specifications. If i need 16GB of 1866 RAM I find the cheapest stuff that has a good warranty and good ratings and usually that is some obscure stuff from china, but I have never had any issues in the 5years I have been using this philosophy so I think it works quite well.

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

Would something like Ballistix, or Corsair be considered as a "known brand" to you? Those two are the most common brands of RAM I hear about.

Both are common brands, and both have good looking ram, minus lower end crucial ram. Others you could look at are hyperx/kingston, mushkin, if you don't mind the green pcb, some do I don't, and adata.
