Nvidia and heatspreaders

I just took apart a dead 280 that I had lying around. I have seen in many videos that Nvidia graphics cards don't have heat spreaders on the die. This 280, however, very clearly has a heat spreader on it. Just out of curiosity, when did Nvidia stop using heat spreaders on their cards?

Because they are more efficent? That's my best guess

I'm guessing that if they can avoid the need for a heat spreader and get the die to connect directly to the cooling surface (heatsink) then it will cool more efficiently

With a quick Google Image search, it appears that the GTX 500 series were the last to use a heat spreader. The 600, 700, and 900 series do not use a heat spreader.

I think they stopped with the 500 series.

I believe soon after was around the time they stopped using heat spreaders on gpus. I still shudder when I see direct contact heat pipes used on a bare gpu die, instead of a copper plate. Some venders even have aluminum spacers between the heat pipes, and I smh.

Because it works better without one since most cooler have pipes that have direct contact with the core.

Haha, many of you thought I asked why, when I asked when. I know why you might want to get rid of a heat spreader (Intel's Haswell ring a bell for inefficiency?) I just wanted to know when
