Title says it all, my employer saw that I know how to build Gaming PC's and they instantly assumed that I know how to build a server tongue.gif. Anyways, I don't know jack (stuff) about servers. So some help would be very appreciated, my employer hasn't decided whether they want rack mount or pedistal. I am pushing to get rackmount so just assume that.

Budget:$1200-1300
Things needed:
a 4u case with hotswap
Intel Xenon Quadcore or greater cpu (a E3 maybe?)
mobo that supports 32gb of ram
16gb of ECC ram
8tb worth of hdd space
with a ssd big enough for Microsoft Windows® Small Business Server 2011
*OS is not included in that budget, that is just for hardware.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Don't use an SSD as a scratch disk if that's what you're planning.

Well with Servers, the hardware that you need should be application specific. What will it be used for ? SQL? Storage ? a database ? java ? Once you have a better picture on what it is for, then I guess we could make recommendations.

So basically mainly for storage aye? Do you also have any clue, how many users would be accessing your server at any given time ? 1-5 ? 6-10 ? 11-20? >50?

Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1225
(6M Cache, 3.10 GHz)
 ~$210

Mobo
Asus P9D WS - $250

Ram

Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1600 Server Memory DR x4 Intel Model KVR16R11D4/8I  x 2 ~ $75x2 = $150

Western Digital Caviar Blacks 2TB  (2TBx4) which gives you 8TB  ~ $636

Intel 330 60GB SSD - $120

This build would set you back at least $1366 and that doesnt include a case or PSU.

The highest costing single product would be your HDDs.

I might suggest looking into opterons for lower cost

If it's just storage and nothing else get a Synology rack station.

Easy to set up, easy to manage full of redundancies. Simplest and cheapest resolution I think...

oh god so many choices

Is there someone how knows how to administer such a file server in the company?

I will learn :P

We have offsite backup, and i will be making a nas to do onsite backup, so i dont think raid six is necessary

If it's just storage and nothing else get a Synology rack station.

I like this alot cause then i wont have to to jack with getting the server hardware debugged, can it run the os i need, or is it purly a nas?

Why not just get a Netgear ReadyNas that is 2u or 1u rack-mountable. So easy to use and slot into racks. All you need to do is stick in some reliable hard drives and you are away.

So are you just looking for a NAS?

Is the rendering part a requirement? If so, how heavy is it?
