So I'm a complete noob with backplates... A regular titan backplate will fit a Titan X, correct? What do I need to be looking for to know if something is compatible.

No it probably won't.

Previous titan's were dual GPU cards. there won't be cutouts in the same places. I'm sure some of the OEM's will be releasing aftermarket backplates for it soon enough.

You are thinking of the Titan Z, the original Titan was a single GPU solution. If I remember right, it was the same exact size as the GTX 780(or 780 ti?).

Okay, my bad. But do you think the cavities in the backplate will line up?

Not sure to be honest. If I had to guess its either very different or exactly the same. Its hard telling with nVidia lol.

It wont work because the Original Titan and Titan Black were GK110, while the Titan X is GM200

Grab a piece of sheet metal,  measure the card dimensions, cut the metal down to size. drill holes in placement to screw into the card. paint it black.

This!

The Titan X has a different PCB layout than the Titan or Titan Black had.
