will the xeon e3-1231 v3 fit on any z97 or only certain?

and will a stock 4690k make a different in gaming?

It'll work just fine and will be better than an i5, but only marginally. I'd recommend getting a Xeon over the i5.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

Make sure your board supports the xeon, it'll fit the socket but it may not be supported.

It'll fit on any Z97 board, but it's not overclockable and isn't worth it. If you are considering getting a Xenon I'd get H97.

It only is if you want to do SLI, thanks intel and nvidia for sli support only on specific z97 motherboards....

Make sure your board supports the xeon, it'll fit the socket but it may not be supported.

Any Z97 board will support a Xeon, the only unknown is of it'll support ECC memory.

Most of those boards don't support ECC.

And Xeons are overclockable, but only on BCLK, not clock multiplier.

What should I set it too?

They're talking about changing the speed of the bus instead of the multiplier, which probably isn't worth it. But here is Linus doing BCLCK overclocking with a Xeon E5-2697v2. This is a lot higher end of a chip than the Xeon E3-1231v3 though.

I've seen that video and I did say HOLLY BALLS!

As a "big" Xeon user... I'd recommend not overclocking your CPU if it's mostly a work computer.

Im a old school Xeon fan. But unless your running true dual or quad cpu's and dedicating cores or strapping cpus and truly managing there use and prescribing there use. There worthless in the consumer idiot market.

The sad thing is 99% of so called enthusiasts haven't a clue how to manage a I3 much less a I7. True multicore users understand what needs to be done to use all there cores and not be a blind mouse when it comes to the software end. And you don't need a Xeon to do it with.

This reminds me of the last of my stock owning and honest support and ownership of AMD products. MSI and a few others made T-Bird dual cpu boards. AMD made matched set cpus hardwired for the job. One could get good welfare cpu's and hard mode them to do the job. But must pencil modded what ever they could get there cheap grubby hands on. None of the boards made at the time were really up to the task. But the worse part of the whole mess was the users didn't have a freaking clue what to do with them. They didn't know how to strap them up for great single thread use or how to use two cores to make there work flow fly. They expected the software to do it for them. Just like folks think software should take care of them now.

I know this sounds cruel to the current folks that think everybody should get a trophy. And you all did so good. OP you need some learning. Your not going to get the bat against the head awaking on this fourm or any other. And a Xeon, i3, i5 or i7? It takes work, study, reading, testing and a shot of batch and config writing. Or as some say now registry work. To make them fly.

Good Luck
