In games that have SLI optimization then 2x 970 will definitely outperform a single 980.

If I currently have a 970 should I get a second one for SLI or buy a single 980. I know the 980 would be more expensive but there are benefits to single cards rather than SLI so I would be okay with spending the extra money

If u get a second card, u double the power consumption, but performance won't double at all. 970 can handle all the next gen stuff, so... It's better to w8 for the next gen cards to get 980 at lower price if u really want it. I don't experience any problems with a single 760 tho.

Depends what kind of games you play and if they support SLI or not.

"Nvidia is the top choice for mobile and crap, AMD is for consoles and pc enthusiasts"

Honestly that's how it is....

"Mobile and crap" are where heat and power consumption are key, so it's worth the extra cost to most people in order to get those benefits. However on desktop where many people have beefy PSUs and cases with decent cooling, nothing wrong with AMD, and they offer better performance for the money then competing Nvidia counterparts.

I knew somebody would misread and say that.

Right now there's no competing counterpart for the 980 (and of course Titan X). Highest competition at the moment is 290/X vs 970.
