definitely wait until amd does their launch in a few months. even if you absolutely refuse to get an amd card, there is a real chance that the 980 will drop in price a bit

Depending on how much money you can spend, I'd go for a 970, 980.

I'll take possible slightly lower performance for significantly lower power usage and heat output any day.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

If you can wait a few months then AMD will be releasing a whole new series, which will also cause the price drop of other competing cards

I don't buy that story about them all of a sudden going back and creating all new GPUs in 3 months. The R9 300 series will probably have rebrands. My guess for the release will be

R9 390/390x = new

R9 380/380x = rebrands of R9 290/290x

R9 370x = full Tonga chip, likely what the R9 285x was going to be before they scrapped the release once Nvidia dropped the GTX 970

R9 370 = rebrand of R9 285

It's still rumors at this point. There's no confirmation that there will be any rebrands.
