So i can afford buying a gtx 970 but i don't know if it might be an overkill for the games i'm playing. I am gonna play dota 2, h1z1, dbz and probably cs go. Do you think its better to go for an AMD 280 and wait until the prices fall when the new AMDs come out and buy it in summer?

P.S.I live in Greece, here the g1 gaming 970 costs 455 usd :D

Depends on how much power do you need because those listed games are not that demanding so you could just get a 280 and be set for a while.

AMD's new line isn't out till June 1st and its still going to be a few weeks after that till you could buy them.

If you're playing with a 144Hz 1080p monitor it's very beneficial. I recommend you buy it. AMD cards are hotter and more power hungry.

as for CS:GO, my GTX970 runs pretty much idle at 60fps, dota2 is a bit more on the heavy side when everything is maxed out.

it was whispered in my ear H1Z1 requires some GPU power tho.

bright side: GTX970 stops its fans when under 65°c, meaning you'll be gaming pretty much silent on the less GPU intensive games

Definitely wait. Basically until something comes out that you want to play and for which you'd need a better graphics card. That might not be until the end of the year and by that time the prices would have come down.

Buy it used.  Don't support Nvidia.  That is all I got to say on the matter OP.

i just have to say that message, combined with your picture is too damn ironic.

on topic: i dont see a reason why we should all collectively stop buying Nvidia products to "stop supporting them".

I don't know, I just had a guy try to screw me out of about £1 on eBay and it was just an absolutely miserable experience from top to bottom just because of the principles involved. I had to take pretty drastic steps to get the guy to cancel the transaction (to the point of almost having to promise really bad negative feedback) just to make myself feel better.

It might not seem like a lot but for some people it's just a miserable thing to have done to them.

@peterthunder

Some interesting info on spec.s for GTA V here...

It looks like you might already have enough to run it. If you don't like the performance when you get it maybe upgrade then?

Basically, the longer you can wait the more you can get for your money. ;)

If you can't understand holding liars responsible then I don't know what to say.  Hurting them in the wallet is the only way they will learn to not do what they did.  They also still haven't admitted to telling lies.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I have a GTX970, and even with the 3.5GB issue i cant find a single thing that doesnt cap the gpu out before i even get to 3GB of Vram. I know someone that did the whole skyrim 4k textures thing, and even there seems to be no issue. however you turn it, the 970 is a killer GPU for the price.

But it's a double edged sword: if nVidia convince people that they need 4GB of VRAM when really the card can't even utilise that much (if that is the case) then they can't expect people not to be unhappy to find out that (in practical terms, reasonably speaking) it only really has 3.5 Gig.

Maybe they should advertise it as a 4GB card but with only 3GB usable because the GPU isn't fast enough to utilise any more than that. :0/

Edit: Also, I have a GTX 970 arriving hopefully today.

Another Edit: And another irony is that a lot of the people that are butt-hurt over the 970 RAM issue have 16GB system RAM in a rig they use for nothing but gaming. :0/

very good point, small note tho: 3.5GB,

and the 4GB is for extreme cases (like that one AMD card with 8GB Vram) where games have odd requirements (think minecraft with 4K graphics)

i wish you much fun with the GTX970 and ALL the FPSes :P

Well it's b-grade so there's still a chance it might not even work when it arrives :0/

If that is actually the case then the money's going onto my credit card, and I'll pick something up further on down the line (but hoping it works).

Do you think r9 280 might not be enough for the GTA V that comes out next month?

Since the recommended GPU for GTA V is only a GTX 660, I imagine the R9 280 should be awesome for it as long as you have an i5 or better for the CPU. An R9 280 is a far better GPU than the GTX 660.

Still, if you're buying a GPU for GTA V, wait until next month for it to come out and be benchmarked.
