hello fellow techies,

i want to upgrade my laptop (asus K53E i3 )

so i know it has the socket g2 also known as rPGA 988B and the motherboard is K53SD REV 2.0

and i want to upgrade it to an i7 like this one i7-2640M.

and i could buy this on ebay for around 80 bucks.

now i wanna know if it is possible to replace my processor and if it is cheaper for a few years then buying a new laptop.

You most likely cannot upgrade it.

99% of laptops today have the cpu and vital components soldered to the motherboard.

**EDIT: Unless one of the laptops main selling points was the ability to upgrade it, then it is sadly impossible today.

If it's actually a PGA (pin grid array) like you said above, yes...you'd be able to change it

Otherwise if it's a BGA (ball grid array) then it's soldered on and you won't be able to swap it out.

Yeah, nope. No way in hell you can upgrade a laptop (apart from... I dunno, RAM?) and even if a method exists, it will be either a.) expensive as all hell b.) there's no parts available or c.) the method is highly complicated.

if it's still use PGA (Pin Grid Array) socket, it's upgradeable. but keep in minds that your mobo supports it (by power or maybe cooling system)

$80 isn't a lot, so you are not at a great loss if it doesn't work, the cpu wont hit its turboboost clock if it doesnt have enough power/low temp so keep that in mind, a far as i can see if the socket is correct and the bios is up to date, i'm 90% positive it will work as the TDP of both CPUs are the same.

As you can see the i7 is barely faster and ONLY noticeably faster if ur laptop can keep the CPU cool enough to clock it up (which may be possible) look into cpu fan speed control and make sure you have good thermal paste.

Dual 4gb ram sticks would help if u keep a lot of stuff open (dont go over 1333 mhz ur cpu isn't rated for it), and a crucial MX100 512gb SSD (fastest and and largest ssd for its price range) for super fast boots and file operations.

Ram and a SSD can be expensive but nothing is stopping you from keeping those when u plan to get a new device (that SSD could last u 5+ years).

Laptops that are designed to be modular aren't difficult to upgrade. All it takes is getting to the parts, really. Like here:

https://instagram.com/p/x9_sO3nDkZ/?modal=true easy CPU access. Just unscrew backplate, unscrew fan, unscrew heatsink, and voila! A CPU in a socket!

https://instagram.com/p/z7L1z8HDic/?modal=true or here, where I replaced the GPU heatsink. You can see my old one at the top right.

https://hostr.co/file/0SnkboUsIEPA/IMG_20150307_065437.jpg and a nice shot of my MXM GPU. All you need to do is take it out of the slot. Like on a desktop.

https://instagram.com/p/x2sQ3MnDp7/?modal=true and here's on my old laptop with the GPU out of the socket. See the plug? Easy.

Since you have PGA, it should be socketed. Your only issue is if your BIOS supports it (which it might very well do) and if your heatsink can handle it (which it might, since that i7 is a dual core like the i3 you have now) and if your PSU can supply enough to it. Otherwise should be no problems.

Good luck! Due to it being ASUS, see if you can find a service manual to use for accessing the CPU. ASUS laptops are built with two goals in mind: Being THE most anti-consumer-access-friendly thing on the planet, and cooling their ROG series well.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
