3 pin vs Pwm

Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

So I have an Asus mother board that comes with in built software that controls fan speed based on temps - this is currently working with my 3 pins fans as well as my pwm fan - so is there any point in spendong a not extra on a pwm?

PWM fans have more accurate control and can hit lower speeds (usually minimum is 20% for PWM while DC control can for the most part only go down to around 40-50%)

this^^^

unless you are trying to make a very quiet PC, PWM is not really with the extra cost

You need to make sure your motherboard actually supports PWM though.  Having 4-pin headers is not always a sign here.  My MSI's 4-pin headers control the fan speed through voltage, not PWM.  (well, the CPU header is PWM, the other two 4-pin headers use voltage)
