Hey all!

So the office's 15 year old server just died and I'm looking into building a new one. (we never buy prebuilt here at LTT  ;) )

I just happen to not know very much at all about servers (feel free to use non server analogies tho) and would like some advice. I may be missing a part, so tell please me if I am. Open to criticism. Also, is SAS over SATA really worth it? NOTE: The chassis comes with a Redundant PSU.

Ask any questions if needed.

Thanks!

What the server is for. As if you had one server dead the rack is still usable. Not sure if you need to spend 450usd on a new one. I would recommend investing into backup hdd as it is more important.

EVGA SR-2 / 2x Intel Xeon X5675 4.4Ghz OC / 24GB EEC 1800Mhz OC/ AMD RX570 / Enermax Evoliution 1050W / Main RAID 0: 2x256GB 840EVO SSD / BackUp(1) Raid 5: 3x2TB WD HDD / BackUp(2) 8x2TB / Dell U2412M / Dell U2312HM

Thanks for the replies!

I'm gonna get some better statistics tomorrow afternoon to see exactly what I'll need in terms of specs. And also, there is no hardware that is worth being saved from the current server (I might try to look at the rack/chassis, but the server is at another office a fair distance away).

Do not get open box items expecially for a server build. Some Xeon CPUs do not have onboard graphics, you will need one with it in order to use the video outputs. Unless the motherboard specified it has it's own dedicated iGPU. Discrete gpu might work, but most gpu drivers for server OS are limited to their workstation graphic cards. For server boards check out Asus or SuperMicro. Different between SAS and Sata is SAS drives can run up to 15K while the max for Sata like the Velociraptor tops out at 10K. SAS can also support port multiplier where a single SAS port can connect up to multiple SAS drives. SATA can only connect 1 drive per port. SAS is also compatible with SATA drives. What this means is you can plug your SATA drive to a SAS port, but a SAS drive cannot be plugged into a SATA port.
