Using Different Cable than Included with PSU

atomicmonkey101

Hi All,

I just got my computer set back up and I couldn't find the power cable that came with the PSU (OCZ 80+ Gold 850W) and I was wondering if it would be ok if I used what looks to be a monitor cable to power my computer.

I didn't turn my computer on, but, I plugged in the cable just to test the waters and the mobo (powered?) light came on so I assumed it would probably be alright to use, but I wasn't sure.

Would the cable I am using be incapable of powering my computer, some sort of power limit I should know of? My system really doesn't use that much power, i5 4440 and R9 270 (I got the PSU on a great sale), so would it really matter if I used a different cable to power things up?

I am not that PSU savy so I don't know much about the do's and don'ts.

Thanks for the advice!

It's perfectly fine. As long as it fits and works, it is pretty much for sure going to be thick enough gauge wire. Even a lamp cord could run an i5+270.

Yep, monitors and PSUs pretty much use the same cables. I've been mixing and matching for years and have never had an issue.

Great, thanks guys. The cable is decently thick, not quite as much as the old one. it longer though thanks heavens the old one was about 2 inches long. Its good to hear, thanks again.

Sorry to quote again. forgot to mention that the cable was sort of wiggly, does it have to be a snug fit?

Not really. The only bad thing that comes with it not being snug is that it's more easy to be accidentally unplugged.

kk. sounds good. I dont think it is in much danger of that. 0 foot traffic and the way its against the wall... very unlikely.
