hey, i'd never normally ask about maths here but its worth a shot.

  x-5                                            x-1

-------       Ive got it down to  ----------   but is there anything else that i can do to it?

3x-15                                        3x-3

Cheers - Harry

This is what it should be.

x-5                            (x-5)                       (x-5)                            1

-----      --------->         ---------      --------->   ---------   ----------->         ----

3x-15                       (3x-15)                    3(x-5)                         3

Now stop looking at miss's boobs and legs and pay attention!

3x-15 = 3 (x - 5)

it equals 1/3

What you got it down to is correct too, but you can again factorise out the (x - 1) from the top and bottom and cancel.

Your answer is correct but how the hell did you get that equation? You could have stated that you cross multiplied to get the equation then worked out the brackets but how could you cross multiply when they were not equal in the first place.

I didn't cross multiply anything. The question as it was given was:

 x-5

-------

3x-15

I factorised the denominator by dividing all terms by 3, giving 3(x-5), then noticed that I could then divide the numerator by this, which left 1/3

It's not an equation, it's just equivalent fractions.

Edit: ooh nvm I get you now. By equation you mean

" 3x - 15 = 3( x - 5 )"

i don't understand how you got to

  x - 1

---------

 3x - 3

Yeah I'm having trouble seeing the leap here, too. I mean it's true, but I could only get there by simplifying it to 1/3, and then multiplying through by (x-1) which obv isn't want OP did.
