hello!

i have a AMD phenom x6 1055T overclocked @ 3.3GHz and 8gb of 1333MHz ram. will upgrading to something like a FX6350 or an FX8320 make a massive difference to in game performance. im guessing that the current hardware isnt bottlenecking my EVGA GTX970 SC. some advise would go a long way. btw although id like an intel cpu, i really cant afford to change the cpu and the motherboard.

Thanks

Rob

The Phenom x6 1055T and the FX 6300/50 perfoms pretty similarly if im not mistaken.

If anything you should go for a FX 8320 or a i5-4460.

It wont make much difference I don't think I would spend a little bit more on a Intel 15 4670k

if u can afford to buy a fx 8350 then you can afford to upgrade to intel, pentium g3258 and the cheapest motherboard you can find that has an lga 1150 socket and OC capabilities, it wont cost much more and it gives you a much better upgrade path :)

CPU-i5 4690k 4.4ghz @ 1.190V, MOBO-MSI z97 gaming 3, Cooler-hyper 212 evo, GPU- r9 290x asus directcuII (-37Mv), Storage-120gb v300(switching soon), 1tb caviar blue, CASE-Red/black h440, PSU-Antec TPC 650.

 I overclocked a Pentium G3258 on an Asus H81M-E

Right now they are like $53

Built my sister a 1080p gaming rig with it, paired with a R9 280 and clocked the CPU to 4.2 but i know it could go farther.

I just dont wanna do extreme overclocks on a cheap board.  I think going from 3.2 to 4.2 is good enough.

Certainly the i5

The FX 8320 and i5-4460 has about the same performance when using all cores.

But in this case the 8320 would be the best choice since he already has a motherboard that probably supports it.

@terbor33 What motherboard do you have?

You could spend 150-200 on an 8350 or 8370 and get probably a 10% bump over your x6, but it's mostly due to clock speed that you'd see any improvement.

Is there a specific issue or performance metric you're trying to obtain with this upgrade or are you just looking to spend some spare money?

i have a ASUS M5A97 R2.0

It supports the 8320, It would give you about 15-20% higher performance, The 8350 would give about 20-25% higher performance.

Not in terms of FPS in games, at least that's not what I've seen on the benchmarks I've read.

Paired with a GTX 970 im confident he will se that increase.

hi Rob welcome to the forum!

In regards to gaming performance your CPU perform very similar to the FX6 and FX8 CPU's...they are not a worthy upgrade to what you have right now what so ever...you'd need a intel i5 to get the full performance out of your beastly GPU...even an overclocked FX-8350 won't max out this GPU in most games at 1080p...and yes your current hardware does bottleneck your GPU...i suggest you monitor your GPU usage in games with VSYNC turned OFF (use MSI afterburner of similar to monitor this)...that way you'll be able to size how much of a ''bottleneck'' your experiencing...

Here's my suggestion, if i was you i'd try to sell the board and phenom online (craigslist or similar) and i would order something like that as a replacement...that CPU will max out your GPU in just about every games:

The 6300 has about the same performance when using all cores.

Why suggest getting the i5-4440 when it wouldnt make much difference?

OP is specifically concerned with gaming, which will rarely if ever use all 6 cores.

Pretty much all newer games that isnt Indie games can use up to 8 cores.

Pretty much all newer games that isnt Indie games can use up to 8 cores.

We've now barely entered the point at which 4 threads are required, we're not even close to using 8 in most games.
