First of all, im not sure how off topic this will get, or if its allowed to be posted. I read in a post that my posts cant be too off topic, so if this is too off topic then lock or delete it and tell me.

So Im kind of angry about this because not only do I think I did nothing wrong, but my phone was wrongly taken away from me, and now I cant even get it back without my dad getting it (im 15 for anyone that cares). So I was sitting in the hallways today using my laptop, and I had my samsung ace 2 charging next to it. The phone was never on, I never used it, and it was just plugged in via usb on my laptop to charge. Along comes my principal, sees me sitting using my laptop, and runs over, grabs the phone, and walks away saying "no using phones allowed". OK, First of all; I wasnt using it, Second of all I wasnt even in class, and third of all, he wouldnt even give it back at the end of the day?. I admit, if I had used it in class and he took it, or if I was using it in the halls and that rule actually applied and he took it, then I wouldnt be so angry, because I would know that I broke the rules and got the punishment. but really though, what rule did I break by charging my phone? Is that not allowed to now? So I ran after him arguing about it, and long story short, I didnt get my phone back and he still has it. Im not going to die without it, but its just annoying how this happened. By the way, all of this was while I was using my LAPTOP, and I guess using a laptop is allowed but not using a phone. Idk lol

Questions;

what would you have done in this situation?

Do you even agree with schools banning the use of cellphones or smartphones?

Who do you think was in the wrong here? me or him?

If it's a school rule, ehhh it shouldn't be out. I wouldve allowed him to take it.

Yeah - phones are not needed during class. My highschool allowed phones during breaks and lunch, though, so class is the only time they shouldnt be allowed (imo)

Most likely you. You had it out and they have a 0-tolerance policy.

I can understand phones not being allowed in classes (at least turn them to silent), but not in hallways. That should be allowed.

And in the future, if you want to charge your phone between classes, or while you're on a break. Get yourself a powerbank :)

All I can say is that is a dumb rule and, your principal seems like a real ass. I warning to put it away would have worked just fine, but no he just had to take it. People, such as myself will keep my phone on my desk/work area and use it not for texting constantly but goggling things and taking notes etc although sometimes ill just read news and the forum. Smartphones are for more than just FTP games and texting, and are often very productive tools to have at school. But this is at a who acknowledges this school and made their policy so they(phones) are allowed but at the discretion of the teacher.

The problem now is that my dad doesnt care about the phone enough to waste time going to get it. So hes just leaving it with him for now. Not sure what to do, I mean Im going to have to get it back sometime seeing as I pay for it. But yea I dont really know what to do now.

@dadasmithywinkle theres no 0 tolerance anything rule. Its only if youre using the phone that they can take it away.  In this case even after I showed him the phone was off he wouldnt let me have it.

IDK why they took it away, then, or why your dad wont get the phone back.

It is your phone, go and get it. otherwise there is a thing called police - I know unrealistic but hey its not illegal and if the school is keeping it from you.... It is a threat at least to the school.

Probably what Ill end up doing if hes serious about just keeping it and my dad ends up not going to get it. Ive learnt my god damn lesson today, Ill never show that I even have a phone at school anymore, thankfully it wasnt a really expensive phone or I wouldve been stressing over it alot more. Oh well, thanks for the support and advice guys, really needed it.

I personally don't believe people should be using phones in class, unless allowed by the teacher for research or something of that nature, but in the hallways, it should be fine.

I also don't believe schools should be allowed to take personally property from students without a warrant from the police (bullying issues, sexting, etc.) That would be like saying, "Hey, you see that wallet in your pocket? I am going to take it against your will even though it has $500 dollars and your drivers license. in it and your parents have to get it.

Just my take on it.

In our school we're not supposed to use phones in the hallways in classes, unless a teacher otherwise says so. People use their phones all the time in hallways though when walking between classes and no one really cares. Assuming you have a zero-tolerance policy at your school, I still can't really justify why your principal would need to take your phone away, since you were just charging it, but then again - there's a reason it's called a zero-tolerance policy. Personally I wouldn't argue with him cause I mean he's your freaking principal. I'd approach the manner maturely, and don't fret yourself over it.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Well, get some fake plastic or cardboard dummy phones... and walk down the halls like you are texting and or calling someone. When one gets taken away, pull out another and repeat.

Go to his car and pop the tires, that will show him.  " Dark Joke "

Tiny rocks in the plastic filler caps, slow but deadly and much less noticeable.

Principals like to feel like they have significant power over you, just like parents or police etc. Respect is one thing but total obedience is another. Its a principal - makes sure the kids are behaving, no one is doing something unacceptable, but there is no need for constant over watch and dictator like "zero tolerance" policies for something like cellphones, Drugs yes, liquor yes, phones no.

Besides its probably high school, in 3 years or less depending  a Principal has no power over you at all.

There is tor for that. You could send him an anon email saying something... Everything I can think of would probably end up in a school lockdown.. so I'm not giving any ideas.

I don't think a mugging is the way to go.  I also don't really endorse messing around with them.
