How to stop a DDoS attack?

Go to solution Solved by emachado99,

Well, it's all good now. ISP had an outage last night.

Alright so apparently Ive been getting DDoS'd since about 5:00 PM EST, and didn't realize until now when my Internet just stopped.

My internet just stopped working, so I was wondering what's going on, and I saw that there was no outages in my area so next step was to check if my router was acting wonky, and sure enough I check the log and I see

[DOS] UMP Packet

and

[DOS] IMCP Packet

So this is great. Internet isn't usable right now. It's about 12:15 AM EST right now so I'm gonna go to bed hoping it's done by the time I get up, but if it isn't... Is there anything I can do to stop it?

And as far as I know, my computer is virus and malware free. Haven't visited anywhere fishey at all lately. I use Malwarebytes and Kaspersky. Also, do you think this could be a reflection attack that wasn't directly targeted at me?

Get a VPN.  Theres a lot of cheap ones out there, and a few free ones.  Often these are meant for businesses but they work great for protection against attacks from random internet warriors.

If you have a dynamic IP, you can unplug your router for a bit, then plug it back in, and you should have a new IP.

If it persists, call your ISP and let them know you're under attack.

I don't think botnet owners will bother attacking a random bloke on the internet.

It's more likely a service issue in your area/ISP.

Not being able to access interent doesn't mean you're under DDOS attack.

I know it doesn't necessarily mean I'm under attack, but when I saw [DOS] and the word packet I thought I was being DDoS'd, seeing how DOS does stand for Denial of Service and you usually send packets during an attack.

But again you could be right, seeing how multiple people are starting to have issues with the same ISP in my area. Hopefully it'll be resovled soon. :) thanks for the input

Seeing how DOS does stand for Denial of Service

It also can stand for Disk Operating System.

you usually send packets during an attack.

All internet traffic is sent in packets

It is extremely unlikely you arewere being DDOSed.  I would look virtually everywhere else before I started suspecting DDOS

. If you have a dynamic ip just unplug your router for 10 seconds should be all good.

I have a dynamic IP.  Have left the MODEM unpowered for a week before, still managed to get the same IP though.

Seems to depend on whether they have 'given away' 'your' IP to someone else whilst you weren't using it.

How many packets did you receive? There's a big chance a switch could have started acting up somewhere and sent the packets (happened to me a few times). If you do not have an arch nemesis, there's no reason for you to be concerned.

With ISPs it's always a chance that the gear can fail before the attack even reaches the customer.

Well I did Google what I was seeing in my log, and everywhere I looked and all the sites said stuff about being DDOS'd. Ah well, its over now. It was an issue on my ISP's end.

It just kinda spooked me seeing

[DOS] UMP Packet Source: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx Destination: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx

[DOS] ICMP Packet Source: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx Destination: xxx.xx.xxx.xxx

Especially because I hadn't seen it before, and especially because it was being repeated over, and over. But you were right, I wasn't being attacked.

I'm a networking noob lol so I don't know much about this stuff. :P
