To upgrade or not to upgrade... That is the question!

LLSKO

Hello guys!

I recently bought a 6990 to replace my 7850.

Don't worry yourselves, I didn't pay a whole lot of it

Here's my current config

  • i5-3570k @4.2
  • 8gb or Ram
  • Kingston SSD
  • WD harddrive
  • Gigabyte 6990

So... I'm currently running a XFX CORE Pro 550W. It was plenty for my 7850, but not quite for me 6990.

I did test the draw from the computer with a little device I have, and it says my pc takes around 370 watts with prime 95 and unigine valley... Same results with battlefield 4, except a peak at 410 watts in the loading screen (weird)

Should I upgrade just to be safe, or I'm I still in a reasonable range?

If I upgrade, what do you guys recommand? (The cheapest possible)

I'd upgrade to be on the safe side. What options that are available will depend on your location. But in US I'd suggest something like this

If you want to be 100% safe, upgrade. Or you could just not run stress tests and you'd be just as safe. You have enough wattage that you're fine if you choose not to upgrade, or to wait until you replace your 6990 with a single gpu card.

A lot of interesting answers... I'm located in canada... What are good options for a 750w power supply (I want it to be future-proof, considering I'll upgrade at some point, I know it's overkill). Modular would  be nice...

If I decide to not upgrade, what are other good options?

I suppose you mean GPU options? It depends on your budget and display really.

Sorry, I had a major brain fart, I mean if I decide to stick with that powersupply, what are the possible consequences...  I know I can strain the power supply, and eventually make it "blow" but, I'm I risking damaging other parts?

Wow, that card can pull around 500W at full stress:  http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/radeon-hd-6990-review,10.html

I see someone has linked it already.

I know, but it's not, that's the thing... That's why I'm very unsure on what to do...

I don't do anything more intensive than battlefield, and it never went over 410, and I was just in a menu, which makes me think it's a bug. If it crashes well I'm obviously gonna change it like mentioned.

I decided on buying a new powersupply, but not necessairly right now.

Is this one any good?

Or it's buddy the 620W full modular version?

I was linking

  1. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-m12ii620bronze
  2. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ss750am

The later is available for 134 on newegg

But I'm interested in the xfx one...

The EVGA G2 Gold 750 Fully modular is nothing to scoff at.... revered PSU and the best customer service in the tech industry.

I have an XFX PRO750, it has been very good to me for two years now.

It is four 12v rails... personally I stay away from those configs.

Yeah it's very badly rated by a lot of people online... I went on the XFX cause it's a brand that I know, they're both rebranded Seasonic if I'm not mistaken
