You know I am interested to hear the answer to this.  I have a Core 2 Duo that I have to overclock to 4 GHz and wondered something similar.  What video card do I replace the 9800 GT with that will benefit the pc and not have the pc bottlenecking it?

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Is your CPU a core 2 duo? If it is it would bottleneck any modern GPU unless overclocked to 4 GHz. If you have a core 2 quad , if you overclock it to 3 GHz you can put in a r9 270(equivalent being a gtx 660 ti) without that much bottlenecking.

Your config is soooooooo old. Even so, i would go for a 750ti. I'm assuming that you are on a budget. Also, the 750ti consumes less power than your 8800 gtx, so it would fit your system. About bottlenecks, if the games that you are playing are cpu intensive, there might be some bottleneck, given how old your cpu is.

The 680 is the most powerful out of these, but it may be bottlenecked. Is your CPU overclocked?

750Ti-though when I bought my 650ti (its the 2GB OC windforce edition) I found it good for gaming at ultra at 1024x768 (Crysis 3), and good for medium to high settings at 1080p (overclocking gave me enormous FPS increases btw-+240MHz).

So if it is overclocked to 4 GHz then what card?

My Core 2 Duo E8500 never bottlenecked my GTX 650ti when it was at 4GHz, so its a good match.

What is the Nvidia equivalent?

As it happens the GTX650 Ti is about the same (you can always overclock to match the 650ti boost in this comparison-I know I did): http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-radeon-r7-260x-versus-nvidia-geforce-gtx-650-ti-boost_125834

Side note: this is from 2013, so the prices vary greatly.

GTX660, R9 270...R9 280 if you feel like pusing it...i don't know why the 750ti came on top here since this card is significantly weaker than a GTX 660 or R9 270.

R7 260X, remember?

yes this would be a good choice too...i'd personaly go with a R9 280 and find a core 2 quad chip that i would overclock under a 30$ hyper 212...

Been there, done that...works great...played BF4 on high settings with HD7950 and 3.6GHZ Q6600.

I know man the gtx 680 is way better than the 750 ti I would also upgrade the cpu

my point was the GTX 660 is stronger than the 750ti...the GTX680 is in another spectrum entirely:

GTX660 vs GTX750ti:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1039?vs=1130

i think people just don't realise how weak a GTX 750ti with it's 600 or so cuda cores really is...
