What do you think about modding socket 775 mobos to work fine with socket 771 Xeon CPU's? Just some thoughts, advice etc.

not all motherboards will work and you need to bios update to do it properly also i would just say dont do it the performance on 771 xeon cpu's are not even as good as a i3

Sources: Personal experience i have modded a 775 socket for a 771 xeon

It's impossible, it's not just a matter of where the pins are physically positioned, the circuitry under it is different. Not to mention the bios won't support it.

-edit-

apparently never mind, it seems to be possible.

Yes, my motherboard works just fine with X5460, but i need to update bios and wait untill new cooler arrives (the stock intel cooler from E4700 obviously can't handle 120W X5460). I bought the cpu for 220 PLN, wich is like 60 USD so i have no regrets

it is possible look it up you cut the plastic stops on the socket and you put a sticker on the cpu and then its compatible I have succesfullly done it
