At the moment I'm running W7 64 bit without a problem, so the question is; should I go for W8.1 64 bit or stick with w7 until w10 is released ?

If you already have 7 then keep using it. No point in switching/upgrading to Windows 8 as both will be updated to Windows 10 anyways.

I got a 8.1 key cheap, so i didn't have to upgrade my windows 7 key,  as i want to have maximum compatibility when Windows 10 arrives.. also i don't really want to lose windows 7...

i would say if you can pick up a key of 8.1 cheap as i did, get it to upgrade to windows 10.

Windows 7 will be worth keeping hold off for a good while yet.

So, I'm buying an ssd soon and I'm doing a clean install.

Stick with 7. It's still an ok OS.

I forgot to mention that I'm not going to buy it, one of my friends is willing to gift me one, since he got some from work.

Again, if you can get a copy of 7 (or even 8) for free/cheap, just use that for a next little bit until 10 comes out. If you are going to upgrade to 10 for sure then it doesn't matter what you install now, as long as it's either 7 or 8 so you can get the free upgrade.
