ok thank you what about a SSHD drive?

Not worth it. Its even worse with around like 8gb of ssd cache. Get a good 1-2tb hhd for 80$ and call it. A day

If you have an intel cpu/mobo that supports Intel RST/SRT, you can buy a cheap 64GB ssd and use it as a cache for you old Hard disk (Intel SRT can only use up to 64GB of an SSD for caching a hard drive). that would be a better experience than buying an SSHD that only has 8GB of SSD Cache.

Old Data degrading to 50MB/s after a couple months. Samsung released a fix last year that didn't work, and its still happening to a lot of people.

Instead of another single 500GB SSD get a 250GB 850 EVO and throw your 840 in raid more with the 850

I think replacing an HDD with a raid config would be super risky and not a solid plan.

Hi i was thinking of getting another SSD, as i have a 250gb 840 evo as a boot loader and was thinking of buying an 500gb one to use as storage to replace an old HDD or shall i buy a HDD, i cant make my mind up, need some help in convincing my self lol.

thanks.

I used a 120gb ocz vertex 2 for system and a 480gb vertex 3 for storage on my old rig. Worked just fine, super fast.

Ssd's are for performance not storage as of now because their cost is way too high to store more than 512gb of data for average customer.

Hdd is still your best option to go with.

WD blue is good, reliable and cheap hdd.

If u are storing something very important to you or your family (photos or videos from childhood or holidays) then you might go for WD black as they are lot more reliable.

Unlike the other comment I believe they're great, just a couple of dollars more and significantly faster cache and loading times on frequently used files.

Heyyo,

I agree. SSHD's are pretty good solutions too. It's the same thing as using a regular hard drive and then an SSD in caching mode. It works good if you're playing a multiplayer game and have to reload maps and stuff since they could be already cached. I have a Seagate 4TB SSHD and I have absolutely no problems with it.

Also, reporting thread to move to storage forum section. :P

Is this Samsung specific or a general issue with SSDs?

It appears to be specific to Samsung 840 and 840 evo SSDs, and for only maybe half of them. the only solution is to run Disk Fresh every couple months to rewrite/refresh the data. otherwise, the firmware loses track of voltage drift and throttles itself from working so hard to figure out how much cells have drifted.

It takes 2-3 months for the problem to get bad enough to really notice, and regular speed tests don't reveal the problem. To see your SSD's actual read speeds, you would need to use a program like HD Tune Free (or another like it) that actually reads the files already on the drive, and set the benchmark settings to read 8MB chunks on full accuracy.
