Alright so my GPU is getting old 2 years old, and I was wondering between two GPU's that looked good I want the best for my buck and I've been doing a lot of research and I'm stuck between two, the MSI R9 290X Lightning or the GeForce GTX 970 now obviously I'll take anything better, but for the same price range and if it takes below 500W so I don't need to upgrade my PSU, that would be great but in the event I do I was gonna get the Cooler Master V850 - Fully Modular 850W. Would that be too much? I'm new so I don't know if too much PSU could screw up something. And after all this could I keep my current graphics card with my upgraded one if I upgraded my PSU? I would assume my motherboard has 2 slots, sorry for being so confusing..

Well are you looking for a card that will be lasting longer or a card that will be putting out a little bit better performance but will most likely die faster

You can never have to much wattage. It might not be as effiecient when it comes to going overkill on the wattage4 but it won't hurt anything.

But to run a R9 290x you would need more than 500w.

I know the 290x does, but does the GTX 970 need more?

And one that will definitely last a while.

290x has some great value right now, especially at resolutions higher then 1080p. However, I think the 970 is the place to be right now.

Also, 650watts should do for a 970/290x, and that's going for the safe (just to be sure) route

290x is better performance wise, with a 970 you (most likely) won't need a PSU upgrade. If you're in to pure performance than 290x all the way.

Also

YAY 500th POST!!!!

The 970 beats the 290x as far as I'm concerned?

Well i would most likely recommend getting the 970. Now keep in mind im a Nvidia fan and i dont like AMD ver much at all mainly because AMD products tend to last not as long however they give out a lot of performance for their value. Just like their CPU's they have insanly high speeds but they dont last very long. Now its up to you but i would also like to tell you that if you get the 970 the last 500MB of VRAM is EXTREMELY slow and had actally led to me deciding to choose the 980 and spend the extra money to get it. Now with that said its really up to you
