pretty sure I answered this already..

Either way, the 3GB VRAM helps a lot and I think it will be able to do Medium (if not High) 1080p for 4 years or so

Lol then which type of games?

BF4 was the most recent I played and it was an average of around 55fps on Ultra 1080p

Four years Wtf!? The 280X is already a dated GPU in need of replacement. It's good for the price point, but that's a ludicrous prediction. You might get that kind of future-proofing from dual 980s or 290Xs, but it's not a goal that makes sense. Get one, keep it for a couple of years until it doesn't perform that well any more, sell it and buy a new replacement. Don't run old, inefficient tech for year after year after year in the hope that you save anything as a result of spending lots early on.

I think the fact it's a dated GPU which still runs most games at somewhere between high and ultra is a testament to its longevity. Four years is an exaggeration, I agree, but to say it's in need of replacement is something I disagree with. Firstly, as already noted, it's still a good, capable GPU. I doubt this is going to suddenly change. Secondly,  R9 290s can be had now for the price 280x's sold at a year ago, and is now situated at the upper-middle section of the market. If the 280x is to be replaced it's not by some brand new GPU, but by the 290. Hence, in market terms, it has already been replaced.

On AAA titles? No way, my 290x can hardly do that

What resolution...idk why nobody even asked this.

At 1080p the R9 280X will be perfectly fine for playing games on high or ultra for 2 years to come for sure. At 1440p, well...that's a different story.

At 1080p BF4 ultra the 290x get 70 fps. The 280x about 55.

And anything under 60 is not good enough

It's a testament to the longevity that it's had, not that it still has going forward. The 280X is hot, noisy, and lacks all of the modern features that AMD are trying to advertise, because it's just a rebrand. It would be like Nvidia trying to compete against the 270X by slapping a 700 series sticker on a GTX 580. Sure in terms of performance it competes, but that's not really enough. Especially in the middle tier where people do generally care more about power efficiency than in the top enthusiast tier.

I doubt you could see the difference between 60 and 55 fps.

I have to disagree with that too I'm afraid. A well built 280x (Vapour-x, for instance) is neither noisy nor hot, and its power consumption is within 10% of what was for a long time its nearest competitor (the 770) (see http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/sapphire-r9-280x-vapor-x-review/18/)

I think in terms of features we're reaching the point of diminishing returns. True Audio and bridgeless crossfire are nice, but are not as significant as older features like crossfire. I know having bought a GPU last October that I was much more concerned about raw performance and driver quality than I was about power consumption (within reason, of course) and features.

I don't think there's an urgent need for an upgrade for those using 280x's to play at 1080p. In fact, had I bought a 280x a year ago, I'd be really tempted to get another now, as there's certainly good value in a 280x CF setup.

OK. You can keep arguing for AMD to not release anything new and to just charge full price for an overclocked version of something they released three years ago. I want them to start innovating.

As do I, but I'd rather they rebrand the odd thing and focus their R&D on higher-end, pioneering products.

I think it's pretty hard to argue they've not been innovative on the feature front though. In the past couple of years they have sorted out frame pacing issues, introduced bridgeless crossfire (which may or may not yield significant benefits), mantle, mixed-resolution eyefinity, brought to market a reference card with AIO cooler, and we're on the verge of freesync. The 290 and 290x are great cards and caused Nvidia to drop prices significantly.  I think AMD have made some significant (and some minor) contributions to the industry.

And none of that makes any difference if they only release a handful of GPUs per generation that are new enough to take advantage of any of it -- especially if their only new products are in the £350 - £450 range, and then the 285 priced weirdly and released with such nonsensical timing.

I know you guys cant tell the future. im just asking for an educated guess :)

Over 60fps@1080? On most games yeah but not on some AAA titles and poorly optimize game.
