So I just found out my sister stole my PS3 and I have witnesses I called her and she denies it. Was it wrong of me to call the police on my sister? I don't like calling the cops as I don't really like them but when she lies to my face about it and I know that it's her considering the only thing missing is my PS3 when I had a $400 laptop sitting right next to it and my Custom PC in the next room and both of them were untouched and I know she's angry that my dad gave me the PS3. Like does she really think I am that stupid? I know I'm rambling on but I'm just ticked off. Am I in the wrong for calling the police on my own sister even after giving her multiple chances to admitt it?

If she stole from you and intended to keep it (and it's not just her borrowing it without permission), then you're completely right to call the police. It's illegal, regardless of if she's related or not.

Well if was taken from house/apartment without permission I would call the cops. Did they break in too?  Mind you they are 17, mistakes are made but if you can't anywhere with her or your parents there really isn't a choice.

Is your sister under the age of 18? If so calling the police will probably be more trouble than its worth. 

 

Try to negotiate with here, talk to your parents if you have to. Don't escalate the situation.

Since she is 17, talk to your parents about it first. They technically hold responsibility for her.

What are you trying to get out of this by calling the cops on your own sister? You may be out a PS3 that may be worth 200-300 dollars. Your sister might be slapped with a misdemeanor charge which may affect her future. Do you think it's worth calling the cops over is the question you should ask yourself.

Hard to resolve the situation if his sister wont admit to it and OP knows for a fact she stole it.

If your brother ate one of your halloween candy bars without telling you and wouldn't admit it and you knew for a fact it happened would you call the cops or would you talk to him about it?

Well, for one thing the police would either hang up on you for a call like that, or ticket you with something. Probably just hang up, but a "$400" piece of electronics equipment is something that a person would actually get charged with.

 

Like I said...it's just a console, being who I am, if I was the cop who took his call I'd probably say "get a PC" and hang up (the cop not knowing he has a gaming PC) lol

My door was unlocked since my last roomate took the only house key we had. I was about to go buy a new lock after seling some stuff and I came home and my PS3 was gone as I stated in the first post I gave her multiple chances to confess before contacting police

How do you know she took it? What proof do you have?

But it's your brother. I mean come on. What if it turned out your brother was depressed and had become addicted to heroin and needed the equipment to pay for it? Is calling the cops on him really the right course of action?

 

You have to understand the circumstances before you make a decision. Calling the cops on a family member is rash and seems to show a lack of basic human empathy. If you seriously value your PS3 over a quick conversation and your sister's future then I guess call the cops but if that's true it's sickening.

Petty theft in the state of Utah carries up to a 6 month imprisonment but since she's a minor that's most likely not going to happen, and a fine of up to $1000. Who do you think will end up paying for the fine. If you think your PS3 is worth more than your sister's future then you already decided it was the right call.
