Preliminary specifications of Intel Xeon E7v3 (Haswell-EX core)

ahhming

18 cores, 36 threads. Need 4K screen to fit it in W7 CPU gadget.

I'd say 2017 is the time to move 6cores (i7) from X99 platform to B,H and Z along with price drop. I can only dream :(

I would really buy these if they were unlocked. They are well binned, and I would want to push the clock rate higher for certain usage. I understand that in servers stability is king, and the draw of the enthusiast ones is the overclockablility and base clock rate, but xeons are more expensive....and you don't need to touch the multiplier in a server system (use at your own risk)...sooo...why not.

The problem I have is that I can't throw i7's into a multi cpu system. So if I want unlocked CPUs in a system with more than 8 cores, I'm fucked. I feel there's a gap, and given the binning of xeons, I would be willin got pay a premium for xeons if they were unlocked.

One of the dual CPU platform for gamers was Intel SkullTrial. It's basically 2 pairs of xeon renamed to Core 2 Extreme, but during those days, there is not lock or unlock CPUs as everything can be easily overclocked. Now Intel can just easily flip the switch for the unlock mode if they want to on a Xeon, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon. I remember reading from somewhere the Core i7 5960x was a actually a 12 core Xeon.

Well increasing the multiplier would be great. But Intel are assuming that the server and workstation guys wouldn't be bothered with overclocking.

Even though it might aid them.

Yah. I just feel since it's the top tier item set price wise and top binned, even though the feature wouldn't be used by most, I feel restricting the high end customers isn't good. It's not a lack of a feature imho, it's a restriction.

I remember those days, I miss that.
