Hello!

Right now, I have two computers. One for gaming. One for editing. I know, it's kind of stupid. Don't ask why. At the time of bying these, (autumn 2013) I had absolutely no idea what a pc was besides being a "magic box that do things that I can't comprehend anyways".

The gaming one has a dual core pentium cpu, 3.0Ghz, and a Radeon HD 8470. Besides browser-based games, I can only manage Minecraft at 720p, 9 chunks render distance, and with absolutely nothing else running at the same time. Avg fps 22, sometimes dropping below 10.

My editing pc has a dual core Celeron, 1.6GHz, 2MB L3 cache and its built in graphics. I can't even play a 1080p video on it, barely getting any results in 720p playback of an incredibly lightweight clip. Takes 30 minutes to encode a 1min clip from 1080p preset to 720p, and by that time I'm almost about to blow my brains out. I have no experience with decent hardware for many reasons, but the fact that tech prices, especially PC hardware is immensely high in Northern Europe is one of 'em.

Please explain as thoroughly as possible how bad this is. I know I'm in some deep shit, but how deep? I just need to know how much difference there'll be if I actually invest in a high-end system for my work. After all, it's my job. Don't be afraid to use whatever words you can think of to describe this. You have all the rights to it, because getting these two machines were the worst decision I've ever made.

Thanks.

I don't really know how to explain to you how bad that is, but it sounds to me like the 'gaming' computer would be better at anything than the 'editing' computer.

Also, at this rate you might as well decide what edits to make on the 'gaming' computer and then apply the edits on the 'editing' computer.

Sig under construction.

The question is, how much money do you have to build a new computer that would be able to handle both tasks?

Just watch some of the build guides on Linus's youtube channel. I think that anything you do at this point would be an improvement. I would say that for entry level gaming an inexpensive a10 APU and a Raedon r9 270x system. You should find that easy enough to buy from a decent boutique builder. Ram should be at least 8GB (again cheap). I would say an ssd would be nice, but you won't need it.

Hope that helps although if you plan on playing anything demanding you're going to have to spend quite a bit more (a system built around the above will probably come to about £500).

Unless you're getting paid to game or video edit... I don't think you're in deep sh**.

That being said you certainly could do for an upgrade!

What kind of budget do you have to build?

You should probably upgrade since you do have an older CPU and rendering and stuff needs more power.

If you can afford it go X99 if you can not either an i5 4690K or i7 4790K.

Two R9 290s or Two R9 280s will do you well.

since I don't know your budget BUT editing is your job i recommend a quadro K400 and a x99 mobo and cpu

100% the quadro though

X99 is definitely not necessary.

A Quadro is if that is your actual job.

OP never said it was though.

Edit: He said invest in one for work, but that doesn't explain WHAT his actual job is.

*drops doughnut*

Well, I was trying to add some  future proofing but X99 is Definitely not neccesary but I did assume that  editing WAS his job so :)

slowly walks away

I just felt like I needed somthing here

Is the OP trolling us?

You not screwed but withot know more about the specifics of the computer(s), budget you have to work with, and what your workflow and gaming requirements are, it's tough to provide any insight what to do next. Either upgrading one computer to handle both tasks, or build/buy a relevant and useful computer.

Looks like you currently have 2 computers with budget CPUs and your gaming one isn't running a capable gpu for gaming, but rather for media playback. I hope you didn't pay too much for these two machines.

Well, all I had was about 500 bucks when I started the business.
