@harrynowl had a whole guide dedicated to Core 2 overclocking.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

i'm thinking about throwing a X5450 in there but the only problem I see is that i only have 2 ram slots and 1gb installed

Upgrade your motherboard. I suggest an Asus P5Q- Pro.

yeah...only thing that stinks then is that i would need to buy a mobo+cpu+ 3gb ram for 90-ish bucks :/ pretty good bang for my buck I guess, but that mobo makes up lots of that cost

But you really need a good motherboard if you wanna squeeze performance out of that X5450.

True, I had this ecs board (945G-M3)laying around but they are notoriously bad :/ If i do go for it I'll definitely want a different board for overclocking. On a side note I've been looking at the 7000 radeon cards lately with a good OC do you think they would bottleneck?

A 780i/790i board or a good P45 setup is probably the most reliable setup for getting a powerful 775 combo. I've got my QX9650 up to 3.85 on my 790i right now, just searching for voltages to get it stable at 4.0 now.

A good board like the 790i FTW Digital has a huge range of voltage controls which are a key to playing to with these chips. A simpler board like the ECS P45T Black are another good choice for a stable but somewhat weaker overclocker. They do have CrossFire though.

Cooling is another pain. Core2's run hot; especially quads, so invest in a Hyper 212 at the very least to keep them under control and watch your chipset heat. Last thing is if you can get a DDR3 board do it, it will provide a stronger base to go forward from.

Edit: Forgot to mention most P45 chipsets feature SATA II while even the powerful 790s only have SATA I. So just another set of features to consider. And if you buy a board used, check it over first for burst caps unless it has solids. Boards from back then had shit for quality.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

I'd grab an ASUS P5Q "Green", they're pretty solid and I believe it's a newer design than the P5Q Turbo/Deluxe/Pro models so it may be just as good. :)

An x5450 overclocked to say 4 GHz wouldnt bottleneck any 7000 GPU. It would only be a bottleneck in single threaded titles and even then it would be slight. Actually a x5450 has better single threaded performance than all amd fx processors so you should be fine, especially with a good oc.
