How to ask a person what country/what their backround is without offending?

Hey guys, so there is this new girl at our school and need some help. Apparently she's from Russia/Slovakia (so is my Grandad) so i am wanting to ask her what area in Russia/Slovakia she is from, but i don't want to just walk up and be like "What part of Russia are you from" As i feel it's a bit informal and rude....any tips?

Sorry for stupid question but i feel it's just a little bit rude that's all, all i want to know is what area are you from but...yea...

Get to know her first....start with simple conversation make her laugh....then once your comfortable around her then ask her. It is rude to ask personal information from someone you dont know especially without knowing the person.

I just chat alternative topic's and then try to way it in to the chat some nice way. You can start something like that, my grandfather is also on Russia. So maybe that is the way...
