no

I'm probably going to upgrade it anyway in a year or less. When the 980 drops in price, or when the next nvidia architecture comes out, whichever is first.

Eh. I don't think you really should. Besides, no bitcoin on Nvidia cards, so yeah.

Oh I didn't know that. What about folding? I want to help cure cancer and what not.

You could, but it would be a lot more beneficial for yourself if you were folding on a separate rig, especially one that's only a backup and isn't used that much. Folding, especially at full load, can be pretty taxing on your hardware.

Folding is helpful, I'd say yes... so long as you have adequate cooling.

Helping save people is an amazing donation of your hardware :D

Well forget bitcoin mining then, it sounds pretty stupid, I'm not even sure why people still do it if it's so hard.

Its worth it with the right hardware. ESPECIALLY if you aren't paying for power.

But in your instance, it wouldn't be. it would shorten the lifespan of your rig and your college will hate you. xD

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

it's a high risk, high reward thing. People can only really make a profit with bitcoins on specialized expensive hardware, but there's a good chance it will be obsolete for mining by the time it becomes profitable.

Folding? Go for it. As long as you have adequate cooling, it's a great way to do some good. Just don't do what I did: buy a bunch of red LED fans in a case with a side window, and start folding overnight in your room.

Plus, if your college dorm has poor heating in the winter, Folding makes turns your PC into a free space heater! :D

Make sure if you do start Folding to:

a)Set it to low while playing games or watching HD Youtube vids (my 7950 wasn't too happy about that...)

b)Make a profile and add the LTT team for earning points. The details are in the first post in the Folding forum.

Have fun!
