If you're just gaming, then three 980s isn't worth while.

If you're really set on three way SLI, then you'll need to get a oard with a PLX chip: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#c=99&l=3&sort=a8

For a PSU, get an EVGA G2 750w / 850w (850w for three).

Some good motherboards for two-way SLI: Asus Z97-A, Asus Z97-AR, MSI Z97 Gaming 5, MSI Z97s SLI PLus, MSI Z97 Krait, MSI Z97 G55 SLI, Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5, Gigabyte Z97x SLI.

Umm Don't go 3 way SLI, its not worth it. The performance benefit it exponentially less than 2 way. Motherboard, get a high end Z97 PLX one MSI or Asus IMO. PSU, for 3-way you would need  900-1000W at least, but if you get 750W and go 2-way it should be fine.

Planning on trying StarCitizen (Highly recommended)? STAR-NR5P-CJFR is my referal link

3-SLI 980s are a pure waste of money, especially if you want to use them for gaming. It's like distilled snake oil in a platinum bottle.

Get an asus z97-a, 2 R9 290Xs, and a 750 watts power supply (the EVGA G2 is a great choice).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I am confused, he said he has 1 980, and will be ordering a 2nd one soon. Where does the third 980 come into the picture? Is he really only doing 2 way SLI. Please advise.

Far be it from me to point a finger at anyone for wasting money. Yeah i'd go with closer to 900 watt power supply. As far as motherboards go, I'd steer clear of Asus boards because I just cant stomach going through an RMA process with Asus if the board should have an issue (and all my asus boards have). I'd go with EVGA (preferably) or Gigabyte or MSI(seem to be better than they used to be). Any Z87/Z97 motherboard will most likely use a PLX chip for lane switching so you'll have that small latency to deal with. I'd go with the EVGA Z97 Classified. Just order it straight from EVGA. They have hands down the best customer service (they are actually in the US) and if you have any issues just call them up. They'll help you with anything.

An EVGA 850w G2 would be perfect; and any of the motherboards I linked would do fine.

750W is enough for four 980s, never mind 3. Just get a 750G2.
