Intel Core i7 4790 vs. 4790k

on newegg, the 4790 is listed as $300, the 4790k is listed as $340, with a 0.4 GHz higher clockrate

is it worth the extra $40 or should i go with the plain 4790 and overclock it? i plan on using copious amounts of water cooling so heat isn't an issue.

Thanks!

The 4790 does not have an unlocked multiplier and the 4790k does

The 4790k allows you to overclock, whereas the 4790 doesn't.

Intel's K series of CPUs means they are overclockable. Every intel chipset you see and has a K at the end of its model, its OCable

Even if you have no intentions of overclocking the chip yourself buy the unlocked version - it will have much better resale (and you just may change your mind down the road.)

The extra money buys extra peace of mind.
