So, after a handy back-pay bonus this month, I decided to treat myself and finally splash out on components for my first build.

The specs:

Intel i5-4690k

Gigabyte gtx750ti black edition

Asus z97-ar mobo

Corsair AX860i

Avexir core series white 8gb @ 2133MHz

3x Samsung 840 evo 120gb SSDs in RAID 0 (hopefully)

So I'm aware this is a strange build. The 750ti will be a 970 in a few mnths and the PSU is simply to be future proof (another kit of avexir will be joinin the 970 giving me 16gb total) there is also a western digital 4tb coming at some point for backup of the raid array and mass storage. I shall keep this thread updated as I go along.

Bear in mind it's my first build, and first forum post so any tips and/or tricks would be greatly appreciated

So the post came yesterday...

post-189028-0-05242300-1422972611_thumb.

All laid out:

post-189028-0-44808700-1422972631_thumb.

Today I finally got started, got to have a neat workspace!

post-189028-0-91480800-1422972696_thumb.

and all was going well:

post-189028-0-13201900-1422972718_thumb.

until I tried the RAID 0 array:

post-189028-0-96919900-1422972753_thumb.

so now I need to figure out what's wrong with the volume that it isn't being detected as a bootable device, or am I being really thick?

Lovely build. I will just ask, why 750ti, why not just save the cash and but the 970 earlier ? Or do you need the 750ti really bad?

And why an 860W PSU for such a card?

He said that he will be getting a 970 in the future. I can see the PSU being use in an SLI config too.

Silly me, didn't read :P

To be honest, I'm just really bad at saving  to desperate to join the glorious master race as it's so often referred too (my old 360 is starting to get tired and my laptop faints at the site of games). I've already found a buyer for the 750 ti so I know I can shift it when the time comes.

Yeah seriously considering SLI on the 970 maybe in summer, also a future CPU upgrade isn't out of the question  ;)

Even for SLI 970 and your other plans it's a little overkill, but good job on your first build! Better to be safe.

Did you change the SATA ports mode to RAID?

The CPU will handle basically everything you through at it. a good upgrade will be an i7 from the Broadwell lineup, but it will be a bit overkill for gaming.

Ah well what can you do eh? maybe I'll get a couple of the new titans when they get released (I should be so lucky!)

I shall upload a picture of where I would assume that information would be located, it says in the RAID information that it is bootable so now I'm even more confused...

Can you go into advanced then post a picture of the menus so I can direct you, or if you can find the menu for "sata configuration" or similar.

Have you actually booted to your install media and see what Windows picks up? How do you know there is actually an issue?

SATA mode is in RAID, just found it there. I've not booted into it yet no, I kind of just panicked and ran to the forums for help. Shall boot into it now. As far as the pics are concerned I'll upload them, highlighted bars are the ones I clicked on/ looked at.

Yeah the MSI boards boot into the BIOS when no OS is detected rather than giving you the white text you would expect. Not saying there isn't an issue, just boot to Windows (or Linux) installation and see what your options are!

So I've done a bit of googling and some people have had similar problems , but just needed to install driver updates... sooo considering I don't yet have an HDD for mass storage, would it be possible to install the OS on one of the SSDs, install the drivers for the mobo, then back up to my external hard drive, then build the RAID array and copy it over from the external drive?

AX860i and 3 Samsung 840 evo in Raid. Why not get a 1tb 850 evo or a 512?

I am just blown away. Like, I don't even know what to say.

How many months did you plan this build anyway?

Yeah the PSU is overkill, however the efficiency is a massive draw to me (my electricity is stupid expensive) and this is designed to be futureproof , so when I go for 970s or a 980 or even bigger cards I'll be fine, also have watercooling planned. the SSDs were going to be different but I decided, maybe wrongly, granted that I would go for stupidly high speeds and just perform regular back ups.

The build has been planned for maybe 18 months now, only been able to afford it recently

Drivers are for in the OS so won't help at BIOS level, unless you meant a BIOS update or similar. Have you tried booting to your install media yet?

Booted to install media, and the volume showed as an option for install but when I tried installing to it it said it couldn't do it

So quick update time: the post arrived on Tuesday and with it came a special treat:

post-189028-0-98681400-1423145080_thumb.

post-189028-0-95797700-1423145155_thumb.

so of course, the system was immediately put in:

post-189028-0-63704000-1423145279_thumb.

Now today I recieved my thermal paste, so CPU cooler upgrade time (borrowed from little brother)

post-189028-0-60410300-1423145345_thumb.

decided to be impatient and just install OS to a single drive until I figured out the RAID issue (and by "I figured out" I do of course mean someone else tells me what I've done wrong) so windows 8 is up and running and I absolutely hate it. So a copy of windows 7 is on its way and hopefully I hall have sorted the RAID issue by then!
