Google Chrome CPU usage seems high.

Go to solution Solved by Atmos,

Thanks for the suggestion, however I turned it off and yielded no real noticeable change. Aw well.

Yea it's just how Chrome works. You can switch to another browser if it's affecting you that much, however the main reason it uses so much more resources is because it is quite a bit faster.

Hoping someone can offer some insight. I just discovered that my laptop seems to run much warmer than I would expect while running Google Chrome.

Some mostly unimportant backstory: I always thought that perhaps my laptop seemed to be running warmer than I would have thought necessary (2011 MacBook Pro running bootcamp Windows 7), but I never gave it too much thought. A few months ago, I decided it was time for a laptop upgrade. I had been impressed with the Yoga 2 Pro that my dad bought, so I decided to purchase my own. My previous laptop had always run rather hot, and whenever I was home at my parents and saw my dads laptop in action, it always seemed much cooler running. Having my new laptop now though, while it is indeed a lot cooler and quieter than the previous one, I sort of expected it to be even more so. Jumping forward to today...

I was reading comments on a twitch stream, and something grabbed my interest (don't quite remember what it was now) which made me perform a quick (admittedly rough and simplistic) experiment, remembering that my dad has always used IE. I opened the exact same twitch stream in both Chrome and IE (one at a time), and I was shocked to open the task manager and see that my total system CPU usage with Chrome open was essentially triple of that when running only IE (hovering around 20 - 28% total with IE, to a massive 60 - 75% in chrome). My laptop overall runs far far faster when I'm using IE; why!?

I would really like to get to the bottom of this. I've been using chrome since beta, and for the most part it's been my favourite browser. But for how long has it been such a drain on my CPU? Perhaps my last laptop wasn't as hot as I thought it was if chrome was behind this the whole time :S. I'm so used to Chrome at this point that I would hate to have to switch, but this performance drain is pretty unacceptable. Had I been aware of this earlier, I may have swapped browsers already a couple of years ago. Please help me! I love my chrome UI too much!

(Note: I don't know if this is relevant, but I am aware of that Chrome tick rate thing, however A) I thought that was fixed, and B ) I didn't think it made a difference for streaming video anyway)

TL:DR

Chrome is utilizing 3x the CPU for the exact same task as IE.
I'm so used to Chromes UI that I can't bring myself to swap browsers.
Is there a fix to this huge power drain?
Is this a known problem? Or is this some weirdo-fluke-case that's only happening to me?
I really want to keep using Chrome.

EDIT:

Laptop is a Yoga 2 Pro,

Windows 8.1
Intel Core i7-4510U @2.00Ghz 2.60GHz
8GB RAM

Chrome is a resource hog. But i love it because its fast, but it's fast because it uses so many resources, which is good because its faster, but so much ram & cpu usage, but speed! but ram...

You can see how this argument goes, xD

As far as IE goes, its actually like, really resource efficient.

-snippity-

Chrome uses quite a bit more than IE and others do. While this makes it faster on most machines, it has the ability to slow down others.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

So, basically, this is nothing new?

I guess I never really noticed heat output or slowdown on my desktop (as it's on my desk, rather than my lap), and always just thought my laptop just ran hot.

I guess this means I have to deal with the resource hogging, or switch to another browser? If so, that sucks :|. Anyone got any recommendations for getting the closest chrome experience I can, without actually using chrome?

Alright, thanks. I suppose I'll have to come to some sort of compromise with myself. With an ultrabook I really expect to run much cooler than it is now, so I might have to force myself to get used to another browser. Which is quite unfortunate because I really really do like the UI and functionality of chrome a whole lot. I'm actually sort of dumbfounded that I'm just discovering this about chrome now. I thought my last laptop was just getting old. Thanks for the info!

Had a similar issue with chrome too, caused strange freezing and hiccups. Could have been plugins maybe but I doubt it. I just switched back to Firefox.
