Hey guys, how long do you think it will take for GPUs to not be benchmarked in 1080p anymore? I'm thinking that in time, all cards can do 1080p perfectly and then benchmarks will switch to only displaying higher resolutions such as 1440p or 4k. Thoughts?

Years, many of them. Up to 5 with my estimation.

No idea. I don't think 1080p is going to be phased out as quickly as many people think.

In four years, when 4K monitors are priced at today's 1440p monitors, and 4K cards are in the $250~ price range, you'll think differently. The 970 can handle low-medium 4K gaming, and it's $330. In four years, I'm sure we can get 980 performance at the $250 price range.

I dont think it will be phased out soon, hell it isnt even a standard yet, there is still a bunch of 720p stuff. But just like 720p, all gaming GPUs can do it expectedly. No benchmarking required

Considering that consoles still can't hit 1080p I'd assume a while, I'm perfectly fine with my 1080p monitor atm. 144Hz is possibly going to be my next monitor that or g-sync/freesync.

Right, but we still don't have appropriate graphics cards to run that resolution yet, and I wager when they finally do release, they will only be expensive flagship cards for the first round. The 980 barely keeps up there even in SLI, and the 295x2 is in the same shape-ish. The 970 will not run demanding titles at 4k maxed out, only lower settings like you said, which is why I'm making this point because I don't know about everyone else, but if I'm playing on PC, I want to max out my graphics.

I completely understand with the 4k monitor prices dropping, but again, we have yet to see a video card capable of running 4k with no issues.

Whenever stacked VRAM is perfected and ready for release, then I'll see your point and my mind will change. But from the progression with hardware, I think 1080p is here to stay for quite a while.

I remember reading that it is expected that by 2017 TV's will be 4K....

So id'e say by late 2016 most benchmarks will leave 1080p.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.
