yes.

not because of the *cough* 3.5 gb Vram *cough* but because it is sooo cheap nowadays to be competitive with the nvidia 900 series, they both perform the same at 1080p, but in higher resolution and games that use alot of Vram (im looking at you skyrim hd textures) the 290x pulls ahead

ok I know enough to surmise that the 970 will be better in general unles theres a rapage of vram but the r9 290x and the r9 series in general runs very hot and has a high tdp so in general assuming im willing to dumb down graphics a wee bit where and when needed which of the cards will give me a better overall gaming exp at 1080p

again, in games with hd texture mods the 290x wins, yes its tdp is very high, but with a good aftermarket air cooler the temps stay lower then 80 under load

then you know the answer , go with 970 if you are gamin 1080p , if its 4k , it would still be 970 because no game reached 4 Gb in vram except Bf4 and SoM in the ncix video that i saw, you can go with 290x if 4k Gaming

i still would go with the 290x simply because if the Vram fiasco, its true not many games will even reach that 3.5 gb of ram but the fact that nvidia lied to everyone...

Even though with a good cooler the 290x stays under 75c under load, it still puts out a LOT of heat into your case/room because afterall, it has a 300W tdp and that heat needs to go some where.

I would still personally buy the 290x > 970 though.

well.... in that case you can buy a second hand gtx 760 for the summer and the 290x keep it to keep your room nice and toasty in the winter
