SSD & defrag?

Go to solution Solved by paprikman,

As I mentioned before, there's no need to disable it, it's only defragging it once a month to avoid read/write errors and to keep the drive performing as it should.

No, it is set weekly by default.

Anyways, if someone else gonna need to know how to do this: in control panel there's 'admin' section, then there will be 'disk optimization' link.

After that, you can see some advanced options, where u can choose what drives should be defraged and in what period.

Windows 8 by default has optimise drives application, you can set it up so that it does it every week or so.

Yes every 12 hours.

I set up a scheduled task in Windows to do it.

You can see how it has increased the read and write speeds of the drive by almost double.

The troll is real, 1/10

I defrag mine multiple times per day.

I can confirm that I get over 900MB/s read speeds.

I say your running RAID 0 since a 240gb ssd shows up as 235-249gb.

223gb is raid 0 of dual 120gb ssds.

There's really no need to turn it off tbh. SSD's can write a crap load before dying off. There's a good chance you'll replace it before it kills itself with too many writes.

In fact you should defrag your SSD once in a while (like once a month which is what Windows does anyway) to prevent it from reaching the max file fragmentation which can cause read errors. It can also keep it performing well as having more file fragments means more metadata that has to be processed while reading/writing a file which can lead to slower performance. Windows isn't defragging the SSD all the time, it's just doing it once a month with good reason.

dude dont joke with ppl's hardware

Incredibly scummy to troll threads asking for advice with such malicious jokes that someone who didn't know better could conceivably believe. Don't defrag an SSD.

???

Im just posting something that works for me. People dont have to act on everything they read on the internet.

But a guy that takes stuff out of boxes and films it told them what to think, so now they repeat it every chance thye get.

No

You can see from my screenshot the sort of performance it gives.

Whether a tech myth or not adding unneeded read write cycles to a SSD can only hurt longevity if not performance. Your attached screenshot doesn't mean much without context. 2 SSDs in raid 0 gives those numbers without any defrag, so you are doing nothing to help. When your drive is using TRIM the performance benefits of a defrag is so small that it is not worth it.

You CAN defrag an SSD, but you'll see 0 performance increase.

SSD these days, especially if you have the durable kind (identifiable by their 5+ year warranty), will take a nice beating before even being a concern down 7 years line.

But there is just no point in doing so, as I mentioned, 0 performance increase.

Did you read 1st post? I don't need to defrag ssd.

I want to disable auto defrag for a specific drive - for an ssd.
