yes i know, i was saying if the new xeons could oc like the old xeons could, a 1231v3 at 5 ghz would have been insane. i know they dont oc though.

My E3 1231v3 maxes out at 55C on the stock cooler while playing Crysis 3. This would have so much headroom with an unlocked multiplier.

Xeon E3-1230 v3 all day long. :P It was a huge upgrade coming from my i5 650.

Wat, my E3-1230v3 hit like 86C on the stock cooler with NT-H1... I reseated it twice with the same results. And with this noctua cooler it hits 55C-64C. :o

pop into your bios and look at your voltages...xeon are binned and should run stable at extremely low voltages...maybe your motherboard overvolt your CPU for no good reason...you should try to start lowering them and see how low you can go while remaining stable.

I'll do that some other time... I'm doing homework, and tomorrow I'm reinstalling Windows and moving to 8.1 since for some reason this 970 is giving me driver issues like no fucking tomorrow... Like to the point where it crashes my computer if I launch a game now...

First crash, recovers, restart game, and everything is fine for like 30 minutes.

Second crash, freezes, fails to recover, stuck with screens frozen, everything else still functions, and a restart is required...

Like every two weeks I NEED to do a fresh reinstall of my drivers...

I gotta say, I really like the idea of cheaper Xeons instead of i7's.

The only thing that turns me off them is they can't be overclocked.

If I ever go intel, Xeons would be the way to go for sure.

yes it's a great bang for the buck processor...great all around for any use really...and can be paired with cheaper H97 motherboards too.

I had a E3 1220 v3 but i missed the fact it didnt have hyperthreading when i bought it so I eventually sold it. I like xeons a lot but the fact that the dual processor models are almost 3 times the cost as the almost identical single processor models is downright insane.

My 4.8Ghz 3570K still destroys any modern 4-core Xeon in 99% of games. But Xeons are a decent choice for the money. Beats a locked i7 any day.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Have a x5650 as well. Having a little trouble overclocking it though. Might be from me not having a beast overclocking x58 motherboard, or needing to update my bios... Don't have time to look into it though since I am busy doing new house stuff.

I have a gigabyte X58-UD5 and I think I can clock it even more. But it's so time consuming that I can't be bothered at the moment :)

I would never say the average Xeon is "great" for gaming.

On average they are clocked lower by quite a fair margin and generally more expensive then their I5/I7 counterparts.

These CPU's are designed for 24/7 no disruptions or failure operation for workstation and server use.

If your buying a CPU for the specific purpose of gaming a I7 or even a I5 will suite you better.

If its mostly a Work Station PC that you might game on in your off time.

Then it wont hurt much. Your CPU performance will definitely be lower so don't fool yourself.

That said most games aren't effected nearly as much as you would think by lower cpu performance.

Some however are greatly effected.

Typically Xeons cant OC unless Extreme version and then your into the 1000+$ segment and then it turns more into a bling bling thing.
