Can people on this forum (or maybe the Internet in general) stop using "effect" instead of "affect" as a verb? It is wrong and very annoying to see.

"Affect" as a verb is used to describe influence over someone or something. "Effect" as a verb is used to cause something to happen.

For example,

"The 0.5GB of slow ram can affect (influence) the performance of the GTX 970." Right.

"The 0.5GB of slow ram can effect (cause) the performance of the GTX 970." WRONG

Appropriate way to use "effect" as a verb is the following,

"Nvidia effected actions after the recent news of the 970."

Generally, "affect" is used as a verb and "effect" is used as a noun. So please people, stop with this nonsense.

Thank you.

English is not my first language either, so...

Does that effect the way you think about what you type? Maybe it has a positive affect.

One of the most persnickety hang ups I've ever seen.

Edit: I mean come on... Sure influence and causation aren't precisely the same but good god they nearly are.

Example: "I influenced the outcome" "I caused the outcome"

In fact I completely forgot "Affect" was a word.

Do not  as I  do, and  not  as I say. Instead do as you may..

Effect is not really synonymous with "caused", he was just using that as a way of explaining it.

Affect is mainly a verb and effect is mainly a noun. There are ways of using them other than that but 9/10 times that's what they're used as (or supposed to be used as).

Now do it in Dutch, French or Spanish. Please bear in mind that this is an international forum. English is an international language and although it's pretty easy (grammar wise), errors like this are easily made and I bet that a lot of people who make these mistakes are E2L and do not speak English as primary language.

There are quite a few grammatical errors that are particularly common. Things like "its vs. it's", "you're vs. your", "There, they're and their", just to name a few.

Seeing these grammatical errors bother me more than they should. If English isn't their first language, it's understandable. But, if English is their first language, it's irritating. But, I don't like to point it out to them. That's rude and I don't want to be perceived as a dick. So, I just leave them be.

Obviously, I make mistakes too. I'm not perfect; I just try to make sure my typing is clear, correct and easy to understand, but I do make mistakes, and sometimes, I don't even pick up on them. And, even still there are things about grammar that I don't know.

I just thought of something. I know there are lots of people who aren't proficient when it comes to touchtyping and so correctly punctuating or correcting mistakes takes too long and is too much hassle so it's just better to leave it be. We know what they mean. I know because I was like that. (Obviously)

I have no signature. There is nothing to see here. Move along.
