hey

I got that game for like 13 bugs last month. I still haven't played it yet, probably will do very soon...

I just wanna know what's the situation. AngryJoe did a review at launch of that game and it was showing that it's worth actually skipping it but I see there are 15 patches and I wonder if things are fixed...?

Yes, because that's how it's retailed as. :P

And it should be playable, they've been patching it for a while and I've heard not so bad things about it.

13 bugs last month lol. Its only funny because the game had so many problems at launch. The game has horrible graphics. Don't get me wrong I love the total war series. I bought this game when it came out and it was playable then but the turn process would take a year lol. It has improved a lot but I would recommend looking up mods for it. The first Rome game was the best.

I've reinstalled it several times and still found it to be a broken pile of fuck. I was disappointed by the fact that essential game elements were removed and reimplemented as DLC such as pirates. Also, Rome (despite being the title faction) is still hard to play which will confuse the ass out of new players. Also, the UI makes the game borderline unplayable for me because it's so confusing and annoying to use seeing as it was a useless update to a non-broken UI.

So if you any specific questions I can try to answer them. I've spent a good deal of time in the game but mostly only single player and custom battles with friends.

Rome II is currently comparable to Shogun II as far as the real time battles go.

Open Field battles

The AI is a bit smarter and actually tries to flank and send the right type of units after your wrong type of units. So in other words they try to make some units go around your flanks and it sends spear men after your horses and it makes its archers retreat if you send units after them. That being said the general can often be dumb. Sometimes it uses it correctly and keeps it in the rear safe, other times it leads the charge straight into its death against my front line. Usually being pelted by all the ranged units before meeting its demise on spears. That latter doesn't happen as often and as for as I can tell it depends on the AI's general type. When the general is inside a unit of 160 melee I find it tends to be more aggressive. That being said FUCK HORSE ARCHERS. They shoot while kiting your units and are often the fastest unit. So you won't kill them with anything but other ranged in open field battles.

Castle / fort maps

Other things to note is while the AI is improved it isn't much better at defending forts than Shogun II's AI. It will put units up on the walls but it doesn't check what type. Sometimes an entire wall is covered with melee with I just send my archers to shoot off the wall before I make my melee push the ladders. That being said once you get past the walls the AI usually has a 2 part plan. Send fodder units to attack the units going up the walls for phase one. Phase 2 is keep its better units around the capture point / bottlenecks to it. As far as when you're defending it really depends on the siege equipment they have. The AI sucks with ladders and will usually fail badly with them. If it has catapults or battering rams it can actually be a decent fight.

Campaign map

The Diplomacy is much approved and much much better. In shogun I never bothered with it. In Rome II you can save your ass with it. The AI tends to honor pacts better and the fact you can make non aggressive pacts is a life saver. It lets you focus on your other neighbors first. Non aggressive pacts just mean you won't declare war on each other. They added defensive pacts which means only if your ally gets attacked and military alliances which means if they attack you attack. Military alliances are nicer since you can now set battle targets on the map to communicate with the AI as to what you plan to attack. That being said it is still hard to fight together with an AI. As far as broken mechanics the worst offender is forced march. The AI just doesn't know how to use it. Forced march increases walking distance by 75% but you can't attack while in that stance and it you are attacked while in it, it counts as them ambushing you. The reason it is broken for the AI is you will units using it to move a couple of feet into your land. Which when you attack them, you get a free ambush. Fixed stuff from Shogun is the fact that crossing into someone's land doesn't mean war. It counts as trespassing and it just makes them lose diplomacy with you.

The unit selection is pretty great. Though some clans are better than others for decent units. The only downside is some of them don't feel different anymore. In Shogun II Ashigaru were cheap but bad, in Rome II some really expensive units don't feel much better than their cheap counter parts.

I am very happy with the game as it is. I only payed 13€ for it i dont know if i could justify the full price. The mod support is great as well.

Me too... 13 euros was a good deal...

When you say "modding" you really make my life kinda "fun" cuz it will actually allow me to make that game into a next gen...hope 980 is enough for that...

Sounds good... but until i get to play it, there will hopefully be more patches so big hopes for it... Can you tell me about the performance in-game? Is it CPU/GPU bound and what's the avg FPS... can I keep a min of at least 30FPS not dripping it below?

I would not count on any more big patches. Their already talking about Total War: Attila. It has an option for Haswell CPU's and I can't tell you if that makes a difference or not. I have an Ivy CPU so I was left out. I have the gtx 680 and with everything on I get 42fps @ 1080p. The game still looks worse than Shogun 2 and the cut scenes look like a 2 year old made them. You should be fine with the 980. The benchmark showed 89fps....http://www.anandtech.com/show/8526/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-review/16

:D oh really? To tell you the truth I might just get another 980 for this one.... 26fps on 4k....and when I put some heavy modding it will be going down to 15fps...

In a large scale battle, and especially a siege, SLI is not going to mean shit.  Game still runs on 1.0000000000001 cores and is 32-bit.

It doesn't support sli and runs on 1 CPU core?

It's not that it doesn't support SLI, the CPU bottleneck just gets worse and worse as you add units on the battlefield.  It's been a bigger problem ever since CA introduced mo-cap animations in Shogun 2, that 1-core has to do the battle calculation, movement calculation, and animation queues.  So in the end, the extra GPU power from the SLI is wasted since when the CPU bottlenecks your GPU usage will tank to about 40%

Ok... Won't a CPU OC make it better?

I never played it when it was totaly broken, just started this month and it seems fine. A few odd choices now and again by the AI, but that's true in most games.

Despite its rough start CA has put a good bit of work into it. They have supported, and i dare say, rectified their mistake.

Rectified is stretching it.  They fixed the bugs, glaring technical issues, EE is what Rome 2 should have been at launch.  But plenty of the issues the community has with it are mechanical and design flaws, and so far it seems CA is refusing to listen.

I see what you mean, and i agree. The game is by no means perfect and hopefully gave CA a kick in the ass and back on track. So they won't mess up again.

But the mechanical flaws are not something they could have easily changed while keeping a healthy profit going, they are a company after all. I think the every long support (essentially the whole lifecycle of the game, up until Atilla) is a good way of at least trying and to some degree acknowledging that they need to listen more.  To me that is enough, and I hope that they saw their mistakes.

Bleigh!  Ever hear of AC series?
