Freshly built pc not posting.

Go to solution Solved by L A,

chould be cheaper

ebay should have the similar model for cheaper but higher chance of getting a dead CPU

so maybe 20 bucks at most

Alright. I'll try to haggle with the dude.

In the meantime, we gotta wait for my thermal paste to come in the mail before I can flash the BIOS of my friend's PC. Again, I will update if it works.

First off the parts list:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($186.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81N Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($71.99 @ Directron)
Memory: Kingston Fury Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($66.50 @ Directron)
Storage: Crucial M500 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($66.06 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB FTW ACX Video Card  ($126.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: BitFenix Colossus Mini Mini ITX Tower Case  ($88.98 @ OutletPC)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 430W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($29.99 @ Newegg)

All the peripherals have been plugged in, the monitor as well (Using a DVI-to-HDMI cord), and that is pretty much it. When thepower button is pressed, the fan LEDs turn on for a second then nothing. The PC is dead silent.

  • I've tried using a D-SUB to D-SUB cable for the Graphics card.
  • I've swapped the RAM and also tried using one of each in the the slots.
  • Tried to boot without the HDD and the SSD.
  • Tried reseating the Video Card.
  • Unplugged and plugged the 4+4pin and 24pin power connectors.
  • Also tried using the MoBo's built in DSUB output. (With the GPU card removed)
  • We're way below the Max power output of the PSU

I was thinking of rebuilding everything again outside of the case but that's for Saturday.

Did I miss anything? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance guys. My pride as a PC enthusiast is pretty hurt right now ~_~

CPU is Haswell Refresh

mobo is Haswell ready only

your mobo need a BIOS update to boot up with the 4590

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Remove CMOS battery, wait 30 seconds, reinsert.

I actually did that just now. Although I just shorted the CMOS jumpers. No effect.

Derp... Wow my bad. Alright how do you do a bios update when the thing isn't booting up?

umm,. You didnt build it outside of the case BEFORE right?

My friend and I were in a hurry when we built it. It's hers actually. But no we didn't build it out of the case.

Are you 100% sure that the ram is pushed in all the way? You should hear a click

I've reseated the RAM just to make sure. They clicked. Still nothing.

Download the BIOS update here. You can see that the first update released support for the 4th-gen chips! You should be able to drop the BIOS update on a flash drive, and use a Flash button on your board. If it has one.. I'll look into that. Before though, definitely grab that update and drop it on a USB drive!

Edit: Her board supports Q-Flash. So try this.

Will do. I'll check the MoBo manual over here for the flash button while I'm at it.

I edited my post. It's worth a shot!

I've been trying it but the PC doesn't get past the LED fans lighting up and dying after a second. I've tried mashing the buttons during that small window but it's not getting anywhere. Should I just replace the MoBo?

This is going to be extremely, extremely.. "that definitely won't help"-y, but.. try booting the PC with no peripherals connected, no HDD or SSD connected. Nothing but power and a display. I had to remove my mouse and keyboard for my PC to boot after I built it..

Edit: Would it be possible to test the board with a different PSU, as well as test the chip with a different board?

Yup,  i agree, i have a USB hub that will inhibit me from going into my BIOS, need to unplug it everytime i want  to modify something. This might help

Planning on trying StarCitizen (Highly recommended)? STAR-NR5P-CJFR is my referal link

Alright. I've tried that and it seems like it's not going to work. I did some research and BIOS flashing of any kind needs a CPU installed. Since the CPU isn't working/compatible with the current BIOS, Q-Flash won't work. Do you think Gigabyte can RMA this with an updated BIOS? Lol maybe? If not we'll have to purchase another MoBo...

To confirm the board isn't completely dead, try booting with no RAM, or CPU. At least try to hear beeps. If you get beeps, it jsut means you need to seat a CPU in it that does work, and then Flash the bios. I don't know if that's possible for you though. If you get the beeps, the board is fine. Just means you need a new CPU or board, whatever you wish to choose.

Thanks. I'm going to shelf this for now. I've ordered a MoBo speaker and some thermal paste. I'll try to see if I can grab a Haswell Celeron for cheap and use that the flash the BIOS. It is my fault that the thing isn't working right now. I completely made a mistake on the MoBo selection. Will update this thread with my progress.

Just take the CPU out of your rig, the i5-4670k, plug it into the H81, do the BIOS update, then put your CPU back in your rig, and the 4590 will then work.  No money spent.  Small amount of work.

Yes sir that's the plan. I needed to clean Illya anyways~ Just going to wait for the thermal paste to come in next week.

edit: I wasn't thinking clearly last night lol.

So an update: It will take a lot of work. The Prodigy case is built so that I need to completely take out the MoBo to remove the heatsink--since the Dark Rock screws from the bottom. I guess it'll be cheaper than purchasing a Haswell Celeron though.

Yea, it will be.  Its some legwork, but you don't have to spend any money.

Yeah I also ran into this problem. I bought a Z87 Motherboard and a 4690k. Luckily my Asus Z87 Pro supported USB BIOS Update/Flashback, so I didn't need a different CPU to update it. :c

Indeed. I'll update the thread when it works--since it's midterm week, I won't be able to get to this task until next weekend. :<

Yeah, them ASUS MoBo are cool like that huh? I've been reading about this all night and that's a really nice feature to have.

A little update on this issue:

I've bought some thermal paste to prep for the CPU swapping. I asked around if any of my techie friends here at my Univ as a Haswell chip. I found one that has a back up G1820 so I'll be borrowing that to flash the BIOS.

I have spare bucks to buy it off of him. For 30 bucks, do you guys think that it is worth it as a backup CPU? I understand that if I was building a budget build that this is a great deal--but I'm only going to grab this as a backup.
